Leo Eclipse in Tripods, Monopods and Other Supports

When you're looking for a travel tripod there are a few key points that you'll want to bear in mind before making the final decision:

  • Size - If you're travelling a long distance and want to stow the tripod for part of the journey, being able to fit it in, or onto, a backpack will be a key feature. You can actually get tripods that compact down to 30cm or less, which will easily fit into a hiking rucksack.
  • Material - Different manufacturing materials will make a difference to the weight of the tripod. Carbon fibre is currently the lightest material that tripods are made of however this comes at a premium - aluminium is a more affordable material that's still lighter than traditional metals. Some will feature magnesium elements like joints and heads to further make them lighter.
  • Compactness - Tripods with lots of leg sections tend to be longer when folded, so this is something to bear in mind if overall length is a factor. Some tripods fold their legs upwards, encasing the head, further shaving inches off the length. Look at how the tripod folds when choosing.
  • Flexibility - In a travel tripod, you want versatility - something that can adapt to what you need anywhere. Look for interchangeable feet, tilting centre columns and ball heads to enable you to take pretty much any terrain and scene on.

ePHOTOzine's Recommended Travel Tripods

Some of these tripods were included in our 12 best tripods round-up, however, that round-up included more than travel tripods. Here are the travel picks:

The Manfrotto Go 190 is a good choice - I backpacked Australia with one strapped to the back of my bag, was easy to use, bulletproof and super light! Great choice and affordable too!

I have carbon Befree with video head, works well with care, even with my Sony FS5 video camera. If the choice is pack or leave behind the tripod, then Befree is a no brainer (12 months use and still fine).
