North Yorkshire Coast

Introduction

Long Valley Books have long been a go-to name in the photography guidebook field - they've produced well-researched and easy to read titles covering the vast majority of the UK's hottest photography locations.

Their latest addition to the range is looking at the North Yorkshire coast, which houses the well-known and picturesque holiday locations of Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay and Staithes, childhood home of Captain Cook. But the area also has some hidden gems, or areas that you wouldn't at first expect to be a hotspot for photography, until photographer and researcher Ellen Bowness explains why you should go there.

A prime example of this is the industrial heartland at the very top of the area of East Coast covered in this book - Middlesbrough and Redcar. There is beauty in the transporter bridge that stretches across the river Tees - you just have to know exactly where and when to be there for the best results, and this is where Long Valley Books excel as a travel-sized companion to your travels.

Content & layout

The book is split into area sections, and within each area section are all the notable photography stopping points along the way. So you can first choose which section of the area you're going to visit (In this title we have the options of Redcar to Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay to Flamborough Head and The North York Moors Countryside), and then consider which points you like the sound of.

Once you've made up your mind you can then easily navigate your way to the page in question in order to find out more about the location you're going to visit. For each location there's a little information about the history and feel of the place, as well as a wealth of knowledge about exactly where to walk to and what time of day is best, to yield the best results. Grid references are provided as well as information about where to park when you arrive.

At the end of each section are detailed maps of the area and each location mentioned is pinpointed, along with the ideal places to head for a photo once there.

With these books Ellen has meticulously made sure every element of what you might need to know about the area has been covered. To the back you'll find a summary index with tide times, sunrise and sunset times and compass positioning of the sun throughout the year.

No matter what your level of fitness or mobility is like, Ellen has made it easy for those of all abilities to find great photography locations. She's even taken the time to provide a location summary chart, detailing with star ratings the difficulty of the walk and photographic interest once there, so you cam make an informed decision on your trip. The distance of the view from the car park locations is also noted.

Verdict

If you're planning a trip to the Nork Yorkshire Coast and surrounding North York moors, this guide book is sure to be an invaluable addition to your arsenal. If you're a tourist visiting the UK for the first time, or a seasoned photographer that just needs a little help pinpointing the perfect location, this book is completely inclusive and allows anyone, of any ability to improve their photography simply by allowing a little local knowledge to guide them to the right spot.

It's difficult to fault the book - it does what it says on the tin, it's very helpful and it's also full of stunning example images from the locations.
