Booq Python Slimpack Backpack Review: Python Slimpack

The Booq Python Slimpack is a compact backpack with a premium feel, and a sleek finish. It holds a DSLR with attached lens and up to 4 extra lenses, and has lots of innovative features. It's available in grey, with red interior. Do its premium looks live up to expectation? We'll find out here.

Booq Python Slimpack Features

The Python Slimpack is well padded and sturdy. It has a tripod holder on the front, with a clip strap and pull out leg sling, to stop the tripod from slipping. There are two large side pockets, the one on the left unzips to reveal two zipped mesh pockets and elasticated holders for memory cards, along with two slim pockets for other accessories.

The pocket on the right has a mesh zippable pocket which holds a bright red all weather cover complete with reflective pattern, along with a key clip, and stationery pockets.

The main compartment can be accessed from the top of the bag, where there is a double zip, and from the back of the bag, which also features a double zip allowing you to fully lower the padded back of the bag and access your other equipment. On the back of this flap is a velcro secured padded pocket for a small tablet. The top flap allows you access to your DSLR, and features a built in mesh zippable pocket.

The exterior of the bag is made from 1680 denier ballistic nylon, with waterproof coating, and the back and straps are well padded. The straps feature clips and pockets for a smartphone or other accessories, allowing easy access without taking the bag off your back. There are also chest and waist straps, and a robust carry handle on top.

The Booq Python also features a unique Terralinq serial number. By registering the bag with its unique number, Booq say they will be able to help reunite you with your lost equipment should it be misplaced once the bag is located and reported to Terralinq.

Booq Python Slimpack Handling & Performance

The bag feels really well made, and is padded with a soft interior throughout. It's a good idea to have access to the main compartment at the back and top of the bag, as this makes it much more difficult to access when worn, deterring theft. It's easy enough to get into the top compartment when the bag is taken off, however the straps can get in the way as you try to access the back. It can be a bit tricky to fully unzip the back as there is very little hand and finger space up at the top where the straps are attached.

If you need quick access to all your gear this may not be the bag for you, however it does mean that your equipment is very secure when the bag is worn. It's comfy, with a well padded and breathable back panel, and the straps are fully adjustable, enabling you to customise them to fit you perfectly. The only thing I found is that the straps are quite wide so you could find they dig in a little with slim shoulders / arms.

The inside of the bag is also well thought out; the movable dividers create a spine like look, there is one long main divider running down the middle of the bag, and three smaller dividers on each side, creating ideal spaces for your lenses. We were able to fit a Pentax K-50 with attached kit lens and 4 extra lenses with room to spare for other items.

The all weather cover is a vibrant rich red colour, and has a reflective pattern, making it ideal for use if you cycle around with your kit.

The styling of the bag is minimalist and neat, and definitely won't look out of place in the city or urban environment. It's made of tough fabric and all the zips are easy to grip and use. The key ring clip will be handy for keeping your keys safe from wandering in your pockets.

Booq Python Slimpack Value For Money

The Booq Python Slimpack is available for £125.92 from Amazon. This is quite a high price, but the bag is of premium quality and is made from high quality materials, inside and out.

Alternatives of a similar size include the Kata Pro-Light PL-3N1-25 Sling backpack, which is available for £140.35 from Amazon and features detachable straps so the bag can be worn different ways, and the Vanguard Adaptor 46, which features two side access pockets to the main compartment, and is available for £69.99 from Wex Photographic

Booq Python Slimpack Verdict

Overall, the Booq Python Slimpack is a well made bag that provides easy top access to your DSLR, but lenses and other items in the main compartment can be a bit tricky to access quickly. Therefore if you require fast access to all your equipment, a bag with different access points is recommended.

The main pro is that back access makes the bag virtually impossible to get into when worn so your equipment will be really secure. The feature will appeal to those who plan to travel long distances with their equipment in crowded and urban environments.

The bag is worth the price, for its materials, sleek clean looks and comfort when wearing, if accessing all your kit quickly isn't too high a priority. The Terralinq feature will also add peace of mind and is something that not many other bag manufacturers offer.
