Microsoft have announced a patent cross-licensing agreement with Canon, gaining licenses to each other's highly valued patent portfolios.

In a press statement, Microsoft said : "This agreement covers a broad range of products and services each company offers, including certain digital imaging and mobile consumer products. Microsoft and Canon have a long history of collaborating to bring high-quality, cutting-edge products to consumers, including color technology."

Microsoft has not disclosed any details of the agreement, however it is believed that the deal could lead to Canon imaging technologies being used in Windows powered smartphone cameras, and the possibility of Canon releasing a smart camera running Windows phone OS.
