Canon has announced the development of the EOS R5, featuring 8K video shooting capability. The camera will join the EOS R and EOS RP models released in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

Canon says that the Full Frame Mirrorless EOS R5 is being developed with customer feedback and market needs in mind, and features 'unrivalled' high-speed, high-resolution 8K video and 'unparalleled' image stabilisation.

"The EOS R5 offers a step-change in performance, with an incredible 12fps using the mechanical shutter and the electronic shutter offering 20fps. The camera’s combination of speed and resolution will set new standards, to make mirrorless an ideal choice for everyone from wedding to wildlife photographers," Canon.

The EOS R5 will feature a newly developed, in-camera image stabilisation system which will work in combination with the lens stabilisation system.

On the Canon website, it says the Canon EOS R5 will offer 20fps electronic shutter or 12fps mechanically and images/video will be transferable via built-in wi-fi where Auto Image Transfer can be used which you can use to shoot and edit on the move or download automatically to your home computer.

Dual card slots are built-in and the camera is compatible with the EF lens range when used in conjunction with an RF=EF adapter.

Pricing & Availability

No pricing or release date has been announced as yet, but you can find out more about the camera on the Canon EOS R5 page.

Wow, that's a brief announcement with tantalisingly few details from Canon. It does not look particularly large.
Can't wait to hear the spec list and the price - and even to see how Canon will be positioning this in a road map. The price of the R has dropped quite a bit today, as has the RP.

With the R an then the cheaper RP as a release pair, and now the R5 and a rumoured R6 as another close release pair is this a pattern Canon will be following. and what will Canon do in the High MP arena too? Exciting times for Canon fans.

A canon Link i just got emailed from canon - https://www.canon.co.uk/cameras/eos-r5/ also talks of what seems like a very neat cloud access idea:
Cloud connected. And then some
Shoot and transfer images and video on the move thanks to built-in Wi-Fi which can link to Canonís brand new image.canon service. Compatible with Auto Image Transfer, EOS R5 allows you to shoot and edit on the move or download automatically to your home computer.
