Canon EOS 4000D Sample Photos We spent some time shooting with the new 18mp Canon EOS 4000D - Canon's new budget DSLR.

The EOS 4000D is a new entry level DSLR designed to sit below the 1300D in the market. It uses an 18mp APS-C sensor, and has a new budget camera body, designed to reduce costs for the first time buyer of a DSLR, it will be priced at £369 (with lens), or £329 body only, although we wouldn't be suprised if the camera's price came down to under £300, as the 1300D is currently £279 body only. There is built-in Wi-Fi, and FullHD video recording.

Costs have been reduced by combining the on/off switch in to the mode dial, using a plastic lens mount, printing the labels on the camera body rather than on the buttons, and it also has a manual pop-up flash, rather than an automatic one. There is built-in Wi-Fi, but no NFC.

The EOS 4000D features an 18mp APS-C CMOS sensor. It features a DIGIC 4+ processor and ISO100 to ISO6400, which can be extended to ISO12800.

The screen is a 2.7inch screen with 230K dots, again, another choice to reduce the price of the camera.

Canon EOS 4000D Key Features

  • 18mp APS-C CMOS sensor
  • EF lens mount (plastic)
  • 2.7inch 230K dot screen
  • Optical ViewFinder
  • 9 AF points
  • 3fps continuous shooting
  • Pop-up Flash
  • Wi-Fi built-in
  • FullHD Video recording
  • ISO100-ISO6400, extends to ISO12800

The use of a plastic lens mount on cameras like the Sony Alpha A58 and A68 seemed to cause some discussion at the time, but reports of problems with the plastic lens mount seems to be rare, and it's more likely that a lens with a plastic construction is more likely to suffer the brunt of any damage.

Canon EOS 4000D Handling

We spent some time shooting with the EOS 4000D, and focus was reasonable. Unfortunately live-view focus seems slow, as the camera does not have dual-pixel AF. The controls on the back of the camera are the same as the 2000D, although the thumb grip is plastic, rather than a rubber texture. The 4000D does not feature dioptre correction, another cost saving feature. The top mode dial is used as the on/off switch, and the plastic build quality of the camera is very noticeable, in comparison to the 24mp 2000D, which feels better in the hand.
