The new 22.3 megapixel Canon EOS 5D Mark III is the long awaited update to the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, and updates a number of features in comparison to the old model. With such a successful model it seems almost as though the changes to the camera are more subtle than groundbreaking.

The camera also now adds a headphone socket which will be of use for anyone recording video. The mode dial on the camera is now locked unless you press the middle button.

A built in electronic level is a welcome addition and continuous shooting is now 6fps.

The camera has a new HDR mode with backeting up to +/- 7 with the image merged in camera. There is also a new M-Fn button on the top of the camera next to the shutter release button.

The memory card cover was taped shut so we were unable to take sample photos, however we were able to view the photos on the rear screen which is a 3.2 inch unit with 1,040,000 dots, and photo quality looked very impressive.
Other improvements that are welcome are the new quieter shutter, with a silent mode that dampens the noise further. Canon say it will make it excellent for weddings. The joypad can set the focus area, of which there are now 61 focal points, compared to the 9 in the Mark II. The camera's focusing is said to be noticeably quicker than the Mark II, as the camera has a new focusing unit, and new processor, using the DIGIC 5+ instead of the DIGIC 4. Of course, we will publish more information including our full review when the camera is available.
