Canon EOS 5DS 5DS R Hands-On Sample Photos: Canon EOS 5DS R (10)

Canon has introduced the new Canon EOS 5DS and 5DS R, both cameras feature the same body as the EOS 5D Mark III, but with a drastically higher resolution sensor. The camera features a 50.6 megapixel full-frame sensor, and are capable of shooting at 5fps. With the highest resolution sensor available in a Digital SLR sized camera, Canon say that the 5DS and 5DS R are able to produce medium-format quality images, but without the bulk and weight associated with medium-format camera systems.

Canon EOS 5DS / 5DS R Features

Canon EOS 5DS 5DS R Hands-On Sample Photos: Canon EOS 5DS R (9)

The 5DS and R shoot 50.6 megapixel images, that are 8788 x 5792 pixels in size, and the sensor has been developed in-house by Canon. The cameras features 1:1x, 1.3x and 1.6x crop modes, giving the option to shoot 33 megapixel (5792x5792), 30 megapixel (6768x4512) and 19 megapixel (5424x3616) images respectively. To look at the cameras, you won't be able to tell any difference, apart from the sticker on the camera, as well as the price difference between the two models.

The Canon EOS 5DS R features a low-pass cancellation filter, and has not entirely removed the Anti-Aliasing (AA) filter as other cameras such as the D810 have. The low pass filter is one of the most expensive pieces of equipment in the camera, and this is why there is a difference in price between the 5DS and 5DS R. The use of a low-pass cancellation filter, instead of completely removing the AA filter means that the focus systems can be the same in both cameras.

Canon EOS 5DS / 5DS R Handling and Performance

Canon EOS 5DS 5DS R Hands-On Sample Photos: Canon EOS 5DS R (6)

Shooting RAW images results in 60MB files, and the camera has an SD memory card slot as well as a Compact Flash memory card slot.

The camera has a new “Fine Detail” picture style that is set up to produce sharp detailed JPEG images straight from the camera, and there are now three sharpening options available when customising camera settings. When viewing images taken with the camera, it’s possible to see the difference in the Standard picture style and Fine Detail, and the level of detail captured is impressive.

The ISO range is ISO100 to ISO6400, and this can be extended to ISO50 and ISO12800. There is also an updated bulb timer feature that can be programmed on the camera, allowing exposures up to 4 days!

The 5DS and 5DS R uses the same battery grip and battery as the 5D Mark III, as well as being the same dimensions as the 5D Mark III, however with a slightly lighter body weight, of 845g. Battery life is rated at 700 shots, and can be extended with the optional battery grip, and the camera is compatible with the 5D Mark III battery grip.

The buttons and control layout of the 5DS and 5DS R will be familiar to anyone who has used the 5D Mark III, however the 5DS (and R) let you customise the Quick control screen, letting you select the options and controls you want to see featured. There are three custom modes on the mode dial. The optical viewfinder gives 100% coverage, and has a customisable overlay, as well as displaying the 1.1/1.3/1.6 crop lines if required.

The camera records full HD video, and can create time-lapse movies in-camera. There is also a built-in HDR mode that will automatically combine three shots taken at different exposures for enhanced dynamic range. Due to the high resolution sensor, Canon recommend the use of L lenses, as well as TSE lenses, and will be emphasising the importance of correct technique on the Canon Professional Network website

Despite what some people say about the size of these cameras always increasing, the weight is about the same as a D300. You'd think Canon want to fuel the squabbles by only putting out low ISO, downsized images.

It would - same as APSC. Presumably the burst rate would be better too, although they have fitted a new mirror return mechanism to reduce shake.

personally would not use a 5d3 for sports - the Mrs has one for weddings and portraits but i feel the faster cameras are better for the sports genre

Hi, Put this opinion on another site also and it is JMO!
Had a quick read and if you want/need 50MP then yes but cannot understand Canons stance on 3 X AEB, No wireless or GPS option (in camera), No flip out screen, OK I no it is for the pro photographer but a flip out screen can be very handy at times.
As I say JMO as no matter what the price is I cannot afford it, maybe David Noton will give his test unit

I hope they've learnt their lesson. The 5DMKIII had a fault too - there was light getting in from the top LCD when backlight used, not sure about anything else. But that's a design fault rather than poor QC... Anyway, mentioned this camera to my wife last night and she said "I guess you'll be wanting one of them now" She knows me too well! I was saving up for a MKIII, but think I'll save more and go for one of these babies.

Why did you down sample the sample images especially when the main feature of these cameras is the size of the images? The sample images are very sharp and impressive but I like to wallow around in super high res pictures.

I'm a Nikon fan and I think Nikon have a lot to worry about - I would be tempted to jump to Canon but only if I have the cash for the best "L" series glass (with a 50 megapixel sensor anything less would be a waste of time)

I was thinking of upgrading from the 5dmk2 to the 5dmk3 but with the release of the ds series i am seriously tempted but i have one question!!. is the low pass filter cancellation filter permanent or can you turn it on or off , because i don't think that every situation is right for not having a filter .

Cheers tony

I don't think there would be much point in the other version if one was switchable.

It is a "fixed" physical filter not an electronic filter.

that's a shame cos it would have been nice to have the option of turning it on or off, i am no expert but there would have to be certain situations where not having that filter would give you the problems that the original filter was designed to negate.

This sentence is misleading as both cameras have the low pass filter fitted. Surely the price difference is down to the addition of the cancellation filter in one version.

Wow, Canon jump in the deep end.
I use a 36mp camera, It needs the latest lenses to cope with the extra pixels.
A 50mp pixel professional studio camera would need the latest professional glass,
So when updating your' 5D you may have to spend money on lenses also.
It's odd that you pay more to have a low pass filter bypassed, What a bodge.
The new mirror lock up system may help with mirror vibration, accentuated by the extra MP,
but this is a very bad solution.( blind photography )
Canon should have used the sensors from the D810 and A7R before going the whole hog with 50mp.
I have used Nikon and Sony, Canons 5D update gives me absolutely nothing to entice a change.

What use is the above, a side by side list does nothing to highlight real world performance differences.
Might as well put a list of a canon and a nikon camera for all the use it is. Smile

The comparison, could be interesting and helpful for anyone wishing to update their 5D3.
The 50mp camera having lower ISO and more noise says it's a studio, or landscape tool.
Extra pixels give so much more detail, but means less light per pixel.
The version which bypasses the optical low-pass filter in the sensor will optimise sharpness.
I'm sure Canon could have brought out a 36mp 5D, without reducing the ISO.
This would be a winner, and worth updating the 5D3, to equal the quality of the 810 and A7r competition.
