Canon Eos 80d With 50mm Lens

Value For Money

Pentax K-3 II, 24mp APS-C, 8.3fps, GPS, £709 body only

Canon EOS 80D Verdict

The Canon EOS 80D is a welcome update to the EOS 70D, and offers some of the features the original camera was lacking, with a headphone socket, improved focus system, and larger optical viewfinder. As part of the Canon EOS system, there is access to an excellent range of lenses, with a number of them particularly good value for money, for example the 50mm f/1.8 STM lens is under £90.

Live view focus and shutter response has been improved and there is now almost no difference between shooting through the optical viewfinder and rear screen in terms of speed and camera responsiveness. With new auto white balance options, you can choose whether you want warm results or more accurate white results, which is excellent for product shots, and it's great that you have the choice of both, without having to set white balance manually, or correct images later, which could save someone hours of additional work. There are also new options regarding image sharpness, and with the new 24 megapixel sensor you can get sharp, detailed images straight from the camera, with lower levels of noise than the 70D.

The Canon EOS 80D is an impressive update to the 70D, and whilst it may not be a particularly revolutionary update, the evolutionary update to an already good product, is definitely a good thing. If you're not looking for a traditional Digital SLR, with an optical viewfinder, than there are a range of mirrorless CSCs available that offer quicker continuous shooting, and a more compact camera body, with some also offering 4K video recording. If you want quicker shooting from a Canon DSLR, then you'd need to look at the more expensive Canon EOS 7D Mark II, with 10fps continuous shooting. For those that want to record video, the EOS 80D offers everything you would need, with microphone and headphone sockets, although there may be some who would have prefered to see 4K video recording, and if you need this, then you'll have to look elsewhere.

With the Canon EOS 80D offering a new 24 megapixel sensor, improved image quality and additional shooting options and controls, the Canon EOS 80D is one of the best mid-range Digital SLRs Canon has ever produced.

This is great, as it means the price of the 70D will come down, and I am looking at getting one of those!!

Wonder when the 6D mkII will be announced . . . . .?

@Nigeboy: Most probably Canon will release 6D mark II and 5D mark IV at Photokina in september. There was also a rumour about SL2, which might come during April/May timeframe. This CP+ is going to be exciting one with Sigma planning to release 50-100mm f/1.8 lens and Tamron releasing 85mm VC lens.
