Sony Alpha 7 III in Mirrorless Cameras

Canon EOS R Vs Sony Alpha A7 Mark III

The Canon EOS R and the Sony Alpha A7 Mark III are both new full-frame mirrorless cameras but when you sit them next to each other, how do they compare? To find out, we've compared the specs of each camera side-by-side to see how they face-off.

We've also compared the Canon EOS R with the new Nikon Z6, too.

Camera Body Weight, Size & Design

There's only a 10g weight difference between the Canon EOS R (660g) and the Sony Alpha A7 Mark III (650g) and they're quite similar in size, too. Although, the Alpha A7 Mark III does have a much more box-style body than the Canon EOS R which has a few more curves to it.

Image Sensor & Resolution

A 30Mp CMOS sensor can be found in the Canon EOS R while inside the Sony Alpha A7 Mark III is a 24MP back-lit CMOS sensor.

ISO Range

The ISO range of both cameras starts at ISO50 but the Sony Alpha A7 Mark III offers a slightly bigger ISO range overall reaching 204800 compared with the Canon EOS R's max ISO of 102400. You can take a look at the below ISO images to decide for yourself how well, you think, each camera performs. Once we've written our full review of the Canon EOS R, we'll be able to compare the shooting capabilities of both cameras in more detail.

Continuous Shooting

If the frames per second you can shoot at is important to you then the Sony Alpha A7 Mark III may be the camera for you as it offers 10fps compared with the Canon EOS R's 8fps. Although, an extra 2fps isn't a massive difference.

Screen & Electronic Viewfinder

The viewfinder on the Canon EOS R offers a better resolution than the one found on the Sony Alpha A7 Mark III and the LCD monitor also offers a better resolution, too. Although they both measure 3-inch and are touch-sensitive.

Video

As you'd expect from modern cameras, both offer 4K video recording along with FullHD and various other options. Both cameras also record in stereo sound.
