Canon EOS R8, Canon EOS R50, Canon RF 24-50mm F/4.5-6.3 & Canon RF-S 55-210mm F/5-7.1 Announced With Sample Photos

Canon introduces four new products for the ever-expanding EOS R mirrorless system. EOS R mirrorless cameras and lenses first arrived in 2018, with the launch of the Canon EOS R. The objective now is to continue to grow the EOS R range, offering a smooth and logical path for DSLR users to move to mirrorless, increasing sales of hybrid still/video cameras, take a bold and innovative approach and offer long term support via firmware upgrades.

2023 sees the continuation of this basic policy, introducing two new camera bodies and two new lenses.

Canon EOS R8

The R8 offers a natural upgrade path to particularly 6D series DSLR users, EOS R and RP mirrorless users and APS-C users who wish to upgrade to APS-C mirrorless or move to full frame. In terms of the EOS R range, the new R8 bridges the gap between the EOS R/RP and the EOS R6 II.

The basic layout is familiar, with major changes being the resiting of the on/off switch to the right, extra settings in face/body recognition to include horses, trains and aircraft and a total reliance on the electronic shutter, there being no mechanical shutter option.

Canon EOS R50

The R50 is a compact, entry-level EOS mirrorless body that is very similar in style and size to the superseded M50. It is aimed squarely at content providers that wish to upgrade their quality, creative enthusiasts and lifestyle image makers. The creativity aspect is highlighted by the new Creative Bracketing option, where one shot is as set and followed by a varying choice of three more creative filter alternatives. Simple layout, light and compact form factor and a relatively inexpensive entry point sum up the new EOS R50.

Canon RF 24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 & Canon RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 Lenses

The Canon RF 24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 is a full-frame lens offering 4.5 stops of OIS (7 stops with IBIS), 0.3m closest focus, 0.19x magnification and it's compatible with focus breathing compensation. The Canon RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 is an affordable APS-C lens that offers 4.5 stops OIS (7 stops with IBIS), 0.28x magnification and partners well with the 18-55mm zoom kit lens. 

Price: The Canon RF 24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 is available for £379.99 while the Canon RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 is priced at a reasonable £429.99.
