Canon has released its 2019 fiscal year (FY) financial results which, of course, lists how the company has done money-wise in 2019 but it also gives some insight into what we can expect from Canon over the next year which includes the release of a new mirrorless camera and lenses

Even though Canon says they expect camera revenue to decline, they hope to boost sales by expanding their mirrorless camera lineup with an 'advanced feature full-frame model and lenses.'

The switch in focus to full-frame mirrorless comes after the interchangeable-lens camera market shrank 15% to 8.8 million units in 2019 with the rise in smartphone popularity meaning that less entry-level cameras were purchased.

"In 2020, although we expect market contraction to continue at a similar rate and the market size to be around 7.5 million units, we also see stable demand for professional and advanced-amateur models. In order to maintain profitability, it is important for us to secure market share and improve our product mix further in this area," says Canon.

Canon introduced 2 full-frame mirrorless cameras (Canon EOS R and Canon ROS RP) along with 10 lenses but the company says that their lineup is still 'insufficient'.

"In order to recover from our late entry into the mirrorless camera market, we have plans to launch a model that incorporates a newly developed image sensor and image-processing engine that offer even more advanced features," says Canon.

Along with a new mirrorless camera, Canon has also said that they will be expanding their lineup of lenses with models that use the new mount. They will also offer more camera body/lens combos and they're not forgetting the G-series, either, with the company stating they will 'work to improve profitability by focusing sales on high-margin G-series models' which includes cameras such as the Canon Powershot G5 X Mark II
