Canon's first binoculars to feature L-series lenses are the 10x42L IS WP. Incorporating Canon’s Image Stabilization (IS), they are Canon’s first fully waterproof binoculars, with protection to JIS level 7 . The new flagship to Canon’s binocular range sets new standards in image quality and performance, and features high magnification, ultra low dispersion (UD) lens elements and multilayer coatings on all lens elements.
"Until now, the hallmark red ring of the L-series lens has been reserved for only the very finest professional photographic lenses,” said Malcolm Hills, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging in the UK and Ireland. “Representing the pinnacle of 60 years of precision optics design and manufacture, these binoculars will meet the performance and quality requirements of the most discerning user, whether in a sporting or professional capacity.”

Professional L-series quality
The 10x42L IS WP binoculars bring together a range of the highest quality optical technologies. Two ultra low dispersion (UD) lens elements on each side provide excellent correction for chromatic aberration, the rainbow effect found in lesser quality binoculars and most commonly noticed at the edges of relatively bright light sources, such as stars. Canon’s Super Spectra multilayer lens coatings on all the optical elements suppress flare and ghosting to ensure viewers receive bright, clear, high contrast images.

Fully waterproof
Using special adhesive at all contact points and a metallic coating treatment on all exterior surface elements, the body of these binoculars has been comprehensively sealed against the elements. These binoculars are Canon’s first to be certified at JIS level 7. Certification to this standard requires that products be tested at a depth of up to 1 metre for 30 minutes to ensure that no water leaks through. This true waterproof performance makes them ideal for marine and outdoor use regardless of conditions. Due to this high level of waterproofing, moisture cannot enter the body of the binocular avoiding a build of moisture on the internal lens element which is the cause of fogging.

Image Stabilisation
Canon's IS technology is remarkably effective at eliminating the frustrating image shake that can render high magnification binoculars almost useless. Users of the 10x42L IS WP can be on a highly unstable platform and still obtain a stable, consistent image. Canon’s unique VAP (Vari-Angle Prism) corrective IS system sits between the objective lens group and the porro prism on each side of the binoculars. Within a fraction of a second of the binoculars being moved off their optical axis by vibrations, a detection system activates the IS mechanism, altering the shape of the Vari-Angle Prism to refract the light path by precisely the right amount, fully compensating for the vibration.

Bright eyes
A 4.2mm exit pupil, the largest in Canon’s IS binocular range, allows more light to reach viewers’ eyes to offer a bright field of view, and more accurate colour rendition. The long 16mm Eye Relief allows users who wear spectacles to use these binoculars without blurring the edges of the image. The large exit pupil makes the binoculars ideal for lowlight conditions such as dusk or moonlight.

Hardy design
The distinctive L-series red stripe indicates not only the lens quality it also indicates that the highest standards in manufacturing processes and materials have been employed. The rest of the 10x42L IS WP’s design underlines the binoculars’ heavy-duty use and long lasting performance. The construction features a robust protective rubber casing and smoothly curving contours to prevent the build-up of water, salt or sand.

The distinctive easy grip design ensures a superbly firm and secure grasp, even with wet hands or when wearing gloves. Rotating-extending eyecups allow a custom fit eyecup adjustment and ease of viewing. A dioptric correction lock prevents unintentional dioptric correction error.

Environmentally sound
Consistent with Canon's stringent environmental standards, lens manufacture only utilises lead-free glass, while only lead-free solder is used in all electronic components.
