Canon Powershot G9 X Performance

The performance section is where we look at the image quality performance of the camera. Additional sample photos and product shots are available in the Equipment Database, where you can add your own review, photos and product ratings.

Speed - We took a number of shots to test the camera's responsiveness, from switch on to first photo, shot to shot, focusing speed etc. We take a number of shots and then use the average to ensure accurate and consistent tests, making it easy to compare with other cameras.

Shutter Response <0.05secs
Wide - Focus / Shutter Response 0.125secs
Full zoom - Focus / Shutter Response    0.125secs
Switch on Time to Taking a Photo 2.1secs
Shot to Shot without Flash 0.9secs
Shot to Shot with Flash 2.7secs
Continuous Shooting - JPEG
(shots before slow down)
6fps (14 shots)
Continuous Shooting - Flash 2.6secs
Continuous Shooting - RAW 1.4secs

Shutter response and focus are both very quick, and continuous shooting is quick when shooting JPEG images, however when shooting with RAW enabled, continuous shooting becomes very slow.

Canon PowerShot G9 X Sample Photos

Sample Photos - The Canon Powershot G9 X delivers images with good colour and saturation. Exposure is reliable, and dynamic range is reasonably good on default settings. For enhanced shadow and highlight detail, it's possible to switch DR (Dynamic Range) correction and Shadow correction, or alternatively use the HDR scene mode. Portrait photos taken with flash show no red-eye and good colour.

Canon PowerShot G9 X Lens test images

Lens Performance - Image quality is good whether shooting at the wide-angle end of the lens, or the telephoto end of the lens, with good detail into the corners of the frame. The lens is also quite resistant to flare, even when shooting with the sun in the frame. Distortion is minimal with the camera automatically correcting images in camera. Vignetting and chromatic aberrations or purple fringing is well controlled with very little visible. The camera can focus on subjects 5cm away from the front of the lens, when in the wide-angle position, giving reasonably good macro performance.

Canon PowerShot G9 X ISO test images

ISO Noise Performance - Noise is low and detail high between ISO125 and ISO400, with a drop off in detail at ISO800 visible. Noise increases at ISO1600, but results should still be usable. At ISO3200 and above noise becomes much more noticeable, and it's at these ISO settings that you may need to think about further processing or resizing images to get usable results, depending on your intended photo destination, for example if you're shooting for the web, then noise may not be as much of an issue. ISO12800 shows the highest level of noise and is best avoided.

Canon PowerShot G9 X White-balance test images

White Balance Performance - Auto White Balance (AWB) gives a warm result when shooting under tungsten lighting, and the tungsten preset gives a slightly better, but still warm, result. For more accurate colour reproduction, manual white balance can help. AWB performs very well under fluorescent lighting, so we found it unnecessary to use the fluorescent preset, which gave a strong colour cast.

Canon PowerShot G9 X Digital filters

Digital Filters - There are a number of digital filters and effects available including an HDR shooting mode. Creative Effects applies a number of different effects to an image, and some of these have been shown above. There are also "My Colour" options, letting you choose from a number of presets, including Vivid, Mono etc.

Video - There are a number of video modes available, including manual control over aperture and shutter speeds. The camera records stereo sound, and there are wind filter and attenuator options. Video quality is good, although the sound of the lens zooming is audible if you use optical zoom while recording. The camera does not feature any high speed video modes.
