Due to supply shortages, Canon has closed 5 of its factories in Oita, Miyazaki and Nagasaki for at least 2 weeks.
| Canon EOS 90D in Industry NewsCanon has suspended the production of cameras and other related products at some of its factories in Japan due to potential supply issues in China.
The Coronavirus has been given as the main reason for the temporary closures and Canon has said that the factories will be shut down until 13 March 2020. None of its employees, at this time, are infected with the virus, it's the fact that the parts they need to produce its SLR cameras, interchangeable lenses, and network cameras come from China and where the supply chain could become unstable because of the virus.
Canon hopes that once the supply of parts becomes more reliable/stable they will be able to make up for the shortfall in production.
As well as Canon, Nikkei is also reporting that Ricoh has also announced it will be extending some of its production line closures at its plants in Miyagi Prefecture until 21 March 2020.
Previously, Sony announced that the coronavirus outbreak could cause significant problems for its image sensor business and the mobile/imaging shows - Mobile World Congress 2020 & CP+ - have also been cancelled because of the coronavirus.
