The Canon Zoemini is a compact, slim photo printer that produces credit card sized images that can also be used as stickers. To use it, you download an app on your smartphone which lets you edit and then print your smartphone images. It is available in black, rose gold and white colours for £119.99 on Amazon UK. Here, we find out how easy it is to use and how good the images are that it produces.

Canon Zoemini Photo Printer Features

The Canon Zoemini is a simple device, with a power button on the side and a charging port at the back. To load paper, you push the cover backwards in the direction of the arrow on the front and lift it off.

The printer takes Zink paper, which uses inkless technology to produce images. The paper is sticky-backed, so you can peel off the cover and use the printed images as stickers if you like.

The paper is available in a double pack, giving you 20 sheets which cost £12.99. (Different branded packs are available but as long as you get 2x3 inch Zink photo paper, it's all the same stuff.) To use the printer, you'll need to download the Canon Mini Print app, which allows you to edit photos before printing them. Your phone connects to the printer via Bluetooth.

Key Features

  • Compact, pocketable design

Canon Zoemini Photo Printer Handling & Performance

The Canon Zoemini is very simply designed. To load paper, the top cover can be pushed backwards, revealing a space for the paper. Open a pack of paper, and make sure you place it in blue smartcard downwards. Then replace the cover. The blue card will print out prior to the first image when you press print in the app for the first time. Unlike Instax cartridges, the papers won't be damaged by light during insertion. After pressing the power button to turn it on, all the other work is done on your phone.

Once you've downloaded the app, you'll need to make sure your phone's Bluetooth is on and connect to the printer. Then, in the app, tap the printer image to search for the printer. When its name appears on the screen, tap it to connect. Then you're all set.

In the app there are options to browse your phone's gallery, take a new image of sync the app with social media to give access to your images on there. Once you've selected an image, to can move it around, and zoom in/out as you wish, but be aware that what you see on the screen is what will be printed, so make sure you can see it on the screen as you'd like it to be printed. If an image is a landscape and you'd like it to be portrait orientation, you can spin it and zoom in, but make sure there is no white space showing at the edges as this will be printed. There are also some editing options that you can perform, and these can be found along the bottom of the screen.

There are 7 buttons to choose from:

  • Venn diagram: Tapping this icon gives you access, to brightness, contrast, and colour adjustments as well as the ability to flip the image around.
  • Frame: This gives you several frame options to add to the image.
  • T: Add text to the image by tapping this icon.
  • Smiley face: Add face filters to the photo by tapping on a person's face in the image to give them animal ears etc.
  • Sticker: Add a variety of stickers to your image by pressing this icon.
  • Paintbrush: Draw on the image. You can choose the diameter of the brush as well as the colour that you're drawing in.

There's also the option within the app to split an image over 4 prints so that when they are all printed out you can create a 6x4 image, like a jigsaw. Tap the icon on the right under the print icon to achieve this. You can also easily share and download images within the app.

If the printer is off when you try to print an image, it goes into your print queue. This can be accessed from the hamburger menu on the left of the home screen, where you can look through the queue and delete any image that you no longer wish to print.

Once you press the print button, if the printer is connected you'll see a preview of the image to be printed and a loading bar. Once loaded, the printer icon will begin to spin until the image is fully printed. Printing time is about 30 seconds in total.

Regarding print quality, the colours are vibrant but prints are susceptible to haloing in low light images and some detail is lost. Images aren't as sharp as standard prints, and how the image looks on the screen can vary dramatically to what is printed. The images are great for a bit of fun, but high-quality prints they are not. The images are said to be water resistant, so should withstand a bit of rain, but we wouldn't like to bet on them surviving anything other than a light shower.
