Zoemini S

Quick Verdict

The Canon Zoemini S is a sleek, hybrid instant camera with great features for those that love to take a selfie. For shooting images on the fly with friends, it's great. You can also print your smartphone images with it through the app but with little in-camera functionality, and other hybrid cameras available offering a screen and more in-camera options for the money, you might find it lacking in some areas.

+ Pros

  • Slim and lightweight
  • Print your smartphone images via Bluetooth
  • Selfie mirror/ring flash
  • Decent image quality for a Zink print camera

- Cons

  • Little in-camera functionality
  • Expensive compared to better-equipped alternatives
  • Slow to print
  • Difficult to frame images accurately
  • Only saves a digital copy of printed images

Zoemini S Rose Gold PRINT

The Canon Zoemini is Canon's instant camera range, producing 2x3-inch ZINK (Zero Ink) credit card sized images which can also be used as stickers. The previous incarnation of this was the Zoemini instant printer, which could be used to print your smartphone photos.

Now, the Zoemini has evolved into a standalone 8-megapixel digital instant camera (the Zoemini S can also be used to print your smartphone images if you like). It's available for £139.99 from Amazon. In America, the camera is called the Canon Ivy Cliq+ and is available for $159.

There are actually 2 versions of the Zoemini instant camera available - the Zoemini S and Zoemini C. For this review, we'll be focusing on the Zoemini S, which has Bluetooth connectivity and a wider range of features.

The Zoemini C is the cheaper model of the two at £109 RRP and is a purely point and shoot option with no Bluetooth connectivity and only a 5-megapixel sensor. Both cameras feature a MicroSD slot to save a digital copy of your captures, but there's no way to preview anything before you press the shutter and print a photo.

Canon Zoemini S Features

The Canon Zoemini S has an 8-megapixel sensor, and prints images at 314x600dpi. Images are printed onto ZINK zero ink paper (50 sheets of which are available on Amazon for £21.99)

With a ring flash and mirrored surface on the front, the camera is set up to enable you to capture good selfie photos.

On the front of the camera, you have the lens surrounded by a framed mirrored surface to help you compose selfies. This is encompassed by the ring flash, and there is also a small LED flash and the viewfinder.

On top there's the power button, shutter button, flash off/auto/fill switch and a light panel which glows when the camera is on and flashes when an image is being processed.

To the rear, there is the door which the Zink film is loaded into, the analog viewfinder, multiple exposure button and a button letting you switch between the 3x2 capture and a square 2x2 capture.

On the bottom, there's a MicroUSB charging port, MicroSD card slot and a reset button.

Despite the fact that you can capture a digital copy of your images, there aren't any settings or manual controls available to alter the capture within the camera body. The camera will only save a digital copy of an image when film is loaded, so you can't use it purely as a digital camera.

The Zoemini S can connect to your smartphone via the Canon Mini Print app, which gives you more creative control over your images and allows you to print smartphone captures as well. There is no video functionality.

Canon Zoemini S Handling

The entire rear to the camera is textured with little dots, which help with grip. The camera is thin, at just over a centimetre in-depth, but it still feels good in the hand and offers an ergonomical design enabling you to use all of the controls with one hand.

The Zoemini S features an entirely plastic body, keeping everything lightweight. It might have been nice to offer a chrome edging or something, for the price you pay.

The camera is quite slow to print on pressing the shutter - this is most likely down to the photo being processed inside the camera before it comes out. It can be a good 15 seconds or more before the film begins to emerge. It's quite easy to accidentally press the shutter again while this is happening and end up with a dud photo, wasting one of your 10 captures so be careful where you let your index finger rest if you're not ready to shoot.

It can be quite difficult to frame images with the camera - we used the viewfinder and guesstimation based on the position of the lens for several captures and ended up with a fair few which weren't captured as expected. Practise makes perfect but you might get frustrated if you're capturing one-off moments.

It's easy to load film when you're out, and the paper isn't light sensitive so you can easily add more when out and about. Just be careful not to touch the front of the paper and leave greasy marks.

Canon Mini Print App

There is a dedicated app that can be used for both the Zoemini S and older Zoemini instant printer, which connects via Bluetooth to your smartphone. Through the app you can add stickers and filters to your images, and it can also act as a remote shutter for the camera enabling you to take group shots easily.

When you first download the Canon Mini Print app, it takes you through how to set up your Zoemini and connect it to the app step-by-step. Basically, you just need to make sure the camera is on and has paper. Turn on the Bluetooth on your phone and search for the camera in the app - tap the symbol to the top right. You will then be asked if you want to pair with it, and you'll be able to see a green symbol in the top right of the screen showing you it's paired.

You then have 3 options:

  • Large camera icon - Take photos in the app, add filters and send them to print
  • Image icon - Browse photos taken on your phone and send them to print. You can add filters etc before printing.
  • Shutter release icon - Use the app as a remote trigger, at 3s, 5s or 10s delay time. You can also adjust flash through the app (this option only appears when a camera is connected).

Battery life - Canon says that the battery should last for an average of 25 photo prints. The camera features a rechargeable 700mAh lithium polymer battery. This should give you plenty of power, and photos for a day trip out but should you want to print more, consider carrying a power bank to top the power levels up.
