Images With a Scary Atmosphere : church

With Halloween lurking around the corner, now is a great time to get out with your Samsung camera and take some images with a spooky or creepy atmosphere. Here are 5 top ideas for destinations and subjects that will give your shots a spooky feel:

Graveyard/church

One of the most obvious places to head for photos with a spooky feel is your local graveyard and or church. Often close together, these provide ample opportunity for ghostly images. It's always polite to ask the local vicar if possible before taking images, so they are aware of what you're doing and why. Waiting until around dusk and then using a tripod with a slower shutter speed will be ideal for capturing the detail, but still giving the darker atmosphere you're after. Conversion to black and white, either in camera or in post production software, might help.

Woods

The bare branches and withered autumn leaves on the trees at this time of year make them a perfect subject for atmospheric images. Lone trees, or a forest full will give a different feel to the image. Clever cropping and framing can give you a different angle on the subject. You could also add some rags of material or get someone to stand in the shot in costume, to give an extra feel of the season to the shot. Why not place a scary looking pumpkin in the tree with a candle inside, too? Black and white conversion here will work to keep the attention on the shapes of the branches rather than the surrounding woods. Making the image negative, so the tree is dark and the surrounding area white, can also work well.

Castle/manor house

If you live near a castle or manor house that has an olde-worlde feel, these can work really well for Halloween images. The architecture features and interiors can really give a sense of foreboding to images. Some places at this time of year will have events on for the season, adding to the Halloween feel. If there are actors in period costume, then these can really add to the shot. Try to capture them as the are walking along the side of the building alone, to give the impression that they might be an other-worldly being.

Portraits

If you have family members that enjoy a good dress up, then why not capture some portraits of them before they head off trick or treating? When lit from the side, some really atmospheric portrait shots can be taken. Don't be afraid to use low light either, as Samsung's Smart NX cameras are designed to provide excellent quality results even in dull light, thanks to their large sensors.

Still life

If you don't fancy heading out into the night, then why not have a go at creating your own creepy still life image? Everyday objects can be given a fake spider web makeover and flour or other powder added to create dust. If you have any gothic style ornaments these will also look great as part of the set up. Get creative, and see what you can achieve!
