What an exciting day! My good friends at ePHOTOzine have kindly invited me to contribute regular features to their fantastic website, an invitation I simply couldn’t resist. These features will be focused on giving the ePHOTOzine members "insider" professional tips on all that is photography, a subject that may I say I certainly feel qualified to discuss.
So I guess it would be a good place to start if I formally introduced myself?
For those of you who don’t know me, I'm Damian "the BIG Dog" McGillicuddy, the photographer often referred to as "The Lighting Wizard" by the popular photographic press. After successfully completing a fine art degree some 25+ years ago I saw photography as my career of choice. (It was also a really cool way to get close to pretty girls, but we can discuss that in greater detail when we are better acquainted.)
Photography has given me a wonderful life. It has allowed me to travel extensively, visiting fabulous locations, and to capture some of the most famous, (and infamous), people in the world. As a "jobbing" photographer I’ve shot commissions for clients including various World Champions, icons of pop, stars of stage & screen and the odd Head of State, Prime Minister and members of certain Royal Families.
It's safe to say my career has been rich and diverse, from twice being awarded UK Child Photographer of the Year to location-shooting trucks for Volvo and trains for Maersk! (Those of you reading this who currently shoot child portraiture will know what I mean when I tell you that the trains & trucks were far, far easier to control).
During my career I’ve also enjoyed entering the arena of various competitions. (What better way is there for establishing just how good you are in your chosen field than going head-to-head with your peers?) My results so far have personally been very pleasing, with my honors to-date including:
- 1 International Portrait Photographer of the Year
- 5 UK Master Photographer of the Year titles
- 6 multi-disciplined International Photography Fellowships
- 7 Societies Photographer of the Year titles
- A double Masters Award in 2010 for Services to Photography
- In 2011 awarded the rank of Master Craftsman by the Guild of Photographers
- 600+ additional Regional, National & International awards.
I’ve even made the Epson loan collection and featured in the finals of the 2010 Canon Asia Awards. All of which I’m extremely proud of. If you would like to view some of my work or to find out more about me then simply visit www.damianmcgillicuddy.com
So that’s me, but what’s in it for you?
I see this as a great opportunity for you to get the answers you need from someone who has met, and subsequently overcame, the challenges you face every day with your photography.
The exclusive articles which I will share with you via ePHOTOzine will indeed be about photography, but more importantly about your photography! Together with ePHOTOzine our plan is to begin with "How was it done" pieces, showing different shots from conception through to capture. They will detail everything, starting at location, (reasons for etc), and finishing with the image coming out of post production. (An area where I spend very little time in and one which I’ll share with you "tips" on how you can substantially decrease the time you spend in front of a screen)
However as our relationship blossoms and we get better acquainted our plan is to offer additional photography resources to all of the ePHOTOzine members like you, such as:
- Monthly competitions to win prizes
- ePHOTOzine member days
- Monthly "e2" member chat rooms
- Advice & information on techniques
- Team McGillicuddy "doing the job" video clips on ePHOTOzine TV.
So if there are any genres you’d like me to explore, or techniques you’d like to see used, by all means get your questions & requests ready and I’ll do my upmost to answer them for you.
In addition to the above ALL ePHOTOzine members will get a massive and exclusive 20% discount on ALL Damian McGillicuddy Training Workshops.
These interactive workshops are held throughout the UK and cover many topics which are fundamental to those who wish to become the best photographer they can be. For details on all current workshops please visit the workshop section
or our website, and when you’re there don’t forget to read all the fantastic feedback we have received from previous delegates who have attended our courses.
I’m genuinely really looking forward to embarking on this educational photographic journey with you my new friends at ePHOTOzine, who have given me the platform to share with my fellow photographers some of the "must do’s", but equally as important the "do nots!"
All the best.
Damian's first technique will be live on ePHOTOzine this Friday.
