Datacolor Spyder5 Capture Pro Box

Each product can be used in location or in a studio, with the SpyderCHECKR, and SpyderCUBE featuring tripod sockets on the bottom, as well as another on the top of the CHECKR to let the CUBE be mounted on top of it. The aluminium case is well padded inside and well constructed with a rugged outer shell with corner protection and rubber feet. There is a license key included in the box and instructions on where to download the software from.

The SpyderLensCal is designed to get the lens and camera performing accurately to make sure your shots are sharp in the camera, with accurate focus. The SpyderCUBE is another tool designed to help you get the exposure and white balance correct in the camera at the time of shooting, or making it easy to correct in post-processing. Likewise, the SpyderCHECKR is designed for optimum colour accuracy. Finally, the Spyder5Elite is designed to ensure you are seeing the colour correctly on your screen, and therefore when publishing on the web or printing you are more likely to have the same results.

Spyder 5 Capture Pro Performance:

The Spyder 5 Capture Pro kit includes the latest version of the Spyder calibration device, the Spyder 5 Elite, which is the top of the range model. The Spyder5 Elite is an advanced monitor calibration tool that can be used for a number of devices, and will allow in-depth analysis of a monitor's performance.

The Spyder5 is a redesigned colour calibration device and is more compact than the previous versions of the Spyder, the Spyder4. The Elite version allows projector calibration with a built-in tripod mount. The Spyder5 is said to result in more accurate shadow detail and smoother gradients. We'll have a look in more detail at the Spyder5 Elite here:

Spyder 5 Elite Calibration

The calibration process is very similar to other calibration devices, including previous Spyders. The process is quite quick, and after calibration, the software will quickly show you the difference between the before and after results. With an already calibrated monitor, the change can be quite subtle, but for a monitor that has never been calibrated before, there can be a big difference in what you see. You can also measure whether your monitor is capable of showing full AdobeRGB or sRGB colour. You can set up reminders, to remind you to calibrate your monitor, as a monitors performance can change over time.

We've previously looked at the SpyderCHECKR, the SpyderCube, and the LensCal. The SpyderCHECKR is for camera colour calibration - and the difference this makes can be very subtle. The SpyderCube is a quick and accurate way to ensure correct white balance, exposure and contrast, and is easy to use. The Spyder LensCal is designed to correctly assess focus accuracy of Digital SLR lenses, and can help avoid front or back focusing. You can find more information on each product below, with links to the full reviews.

Spyder Checkr SpyderCHECKR - Camera Colour Calibration - the difference this makes can be very subtle.

"Photographers need to be aware that the effect of SpyderCheckr, although easily observable, is quite subtle and the difference may well not be critical for many purposes. However, for those photographers who need maximum colour accuracy, the SpyderCheckr is a useful tool that offers improvements in a convenient and easy to apply package."

Spydercube 500 SpyderCube - This is a very useful tool to ensure correct white balance, exposure and contrast. Using this to get better white balance  and exposure may be all you need to improve your colour reproduction noticeably, making the use of the SpyderCHECKR less important.

"There is no doubt that the SpyderCube performs as intended, quickly and simply offering accurate results."

Spyder Lenscal4

SpyderLensCal - This lets you calibrate your Digital SLR so that your camera and lens combination gives you accurate focus.

"If like me, you own more lenses than you have fingers, then the peace of mind alone of knowing all is well with your equipment may be worth its while also. So long as care is taken to complete the testing process accurately, it is very straightforward, and easily repeatable, which is exactly what is required of a product like this."

Value For Money

The Spyder 5 Capture Pro box set is available for a short time at €289 (Euros), with a normal price of €389 (Euros) - this makes it cheaper than buying all the items separately and if you need all of the products you can save roughly £50-150. The individual items are available for £177 (Spyder 5 Elite), £122 (SpyderCheckr), £49 (SpyderCube), and £49 (LensCal), a total of £397.

Spyder 5 Capture Pro Verdict:

If you have a need for all four product then this saves you money, however we would probably just purchase the Spyder5Elite for monitor calibration, the SpyderCube for white balance and exposure, and the LensCal for lens calibration if you have a Digital SLR and a number of lenses, making it cheaper solution from some of the products. If you don't shoot with a Digital SLR, then you may not need the LensCal, and could just use the Cube and Spyder5Elite to noticeably improve your images both at a capture point and processing them on the computer.
