Q2 2019 Global Smartphone Market share results are out and Huawei took a 17% share in Q2, which is around 2% more than they had in Q2 2018. Samsung is still top with a 22.3% share, up on 2018 and Apple are third with an 11.1% share which is around the same as 2018. Xiaomi and OPPO complete the top five with 'others' taking a 31.2% share of the total.

In total, global smartphone sales fell by 3% annually with 341 million units shipped in Q2 of 2019 but the drop isn't quite as big as we've seen previously suggesting the market is stabilising.

Q2 2019 Total Global Smartphone Market Share Order:

  1. Samsung
  2. Huawei
  3. Apple
  4. Xiaomi
  5. OPPO

Looking at brands on an individual basis, Samsung's smartphone shipment total grew year-on-year thanks to strong sales in the mid-range smartphone market but its profit margin didn't do as well due to strong price competition from other brands. Huawei also grew, bolstered by the Chinese market, but there's still uncertainty in other parts of the world due to the political debate that's still on-going. Mind you, 15% growth year-on-year is nothing to be negative about.

The iPhone is still looking to be too expensive for most with an 8% dip in shipments compared with a year ago while Xiaomi remained in 4th place and OPPO sitting in fifth. OPPO is expanding well in Europe but they are facing strong competition in China from Huawei (as is Xiaomi).

There was no mention of Google with its Pixel range which was the fastest-growing smartphone in the USA back in February 2019.
