The lighting stand adapter lets you mount the kit onto a light stand should you wish and offers different angles to which the light can be positioned.

The panel arrives rolled up - you can then easily attach it to the X-mount by unrolling it and sliding the edges of the X-mount underneath the elastic corners of the lighting panel.

The control box is easy to use - simply connect everything up and switch to the relevant mode. The brightness dial is well damped and smooth, allowing for accurate adjustments as necessary. At max output, the light panel is really bright!

The included lighting stand adapter allows you versatile control of the angle of the light. Simply turn the knob and adjust as necessary.

Dorr LED Flex Panel FX-4555 DL Performance

The performance section is where we look at the results produced with the equipment. Additional sample photos and product shots are available in the Equipment Database, where you can add your own review, photos and product ratings.

Dorr LED Product Shot Setup

For macro shots we stood the Flex Panel on a table, and curved the panel around the product, as shown above. After re-arranging the product we got some good results. Although due to the reflectiveness of parts of the camera lens, it's possible to pick up the LED lights in the product. If you plan on shooting a lot of reflective products, then the diffuser cloth is likely to help solve this problem.

For product photography, any reflective surfaces are likely to reflect the dots of the LEDs, and if this is likely to be an issue for you for example if you regularly take shots of products with large screens such as mobile phones, then a diffuser is available, for around £36.

Using the camera on auto white balance, the image was a little cold in colour temperature for portrait shots, when shooting with the Nikon D850, and setting the white balance to Kelvin 5600K improved the colour in images, giving more pleasing results.

With portrait shots, the catchlight (reflections) in the eyes look square, as though you are using a normal studio softbox. Throughout the shoot, the colour temperature of the light stayed consistently the same, meaning we didn't have to worry about re-checking and re-setting the white balance on the cameras used.

Value For Money

The Dorr LED Flex Panel FX-4555 DL is available for £369.95. If a smaller panel will do, then the smaller daylight version is available for £229.85. Both can be purchased on the Dorr website.

If you want the ability to change the temperature of the light then the Bi-colour version is available for £529.95. The smaller version is available for £349.95. Flex panels can be purchased through your local photo retailer too - find your local stockist on the Dorr website

Similar flexible lighting products are available on Amazon if a reputable brand isn't a key selling point. Westcott's Flex LED range are a branded alternative if money is no object and you want larger sizes.

Dorr LED Flex Panel FX-4555 DL Verdict

The Dorr LED Flex Panel FX-4555 DL is flatter, more compact, and more portable than traditional studio lighting, with the added bonus that you can leave the lighting on constantly while shooting, making it easier for composing shots (rather than using studio flash), as well as making exposure easier. This also makes it suitable for video use. When shooting, the colour output by the LEDs remained consistent, and it was quick and easy to adjust the brightness when needed. The only thing you need to add to the Dorr LED Flex Panel is a lighting stand, or you can use the provided velcro and mount it to a wall.

If you're looking for a replacement for studio flash lighting, and want to be able to use your lights for both stills and video, then the Dorr LED Flex Panel FX-4555 DL is a versatile kit, with a range of uses. For those looking to use this at varous locations, then a bag is recommended, as one isn't provided.

Dorr LED Flex Panel FX-4555 DL Pros

  • Consistent light
  • Suitable for stills and video
  • Uses less power than most studio lights
  • Can be shaped

Dorr LED Flex Panel FX-4555 DL  Cons

  • No carry case or bag provided
