Video Sound Recording Tips With A Pentax DSLR: K3 Mic

When recording video on your Pentax camera, making sure that the sound is a good a quality as the video itself is a key issue. here, we run down some top tips for achieving the best sound possible with your Pentax kit:

Buy an external microphone - Your Pentax DSLR is a brilliant machine for taking images and producing vibrant, HD video images. But, to get the best audio results with your camera, it might be necessary to buy an external microphone. This will enable you to capture audio that's as clear as the images your Pentax camera can produce.

Shield the microphone from wind - Wind, and noise from the elements that you'd rather not capture, can be difficult to eliminate from the recording. Using a microphone cover designed to reduce wind noise can help here. There's always the option to reduce the effect of any unwanted noise in post production audio software too.

Use a secondary recording device - If you're serious about your video and want the audio to be perfect, then you should consider using a secondary microphone such as a boom or lavaliere.

A boom will be good to use in situations where you need to collect audio from multiple subjects in close proximity to each other. They are best used for all-around sound recording, and situations where you don't want to deal with the wiring involved with lavalieres.

A lavaliere is ideal for recording voices in interview situations. They are really good at filtering out any unwanted noise from the surroundings, too. It will make a crunching noise if it's hit or touched though so ensure it is not touched whilst recording.

Shotgun microphones can be mounted to the camera's hot shoe and are great at capturing sound happening right in front of the camera. There is also the option of using a hand-held microphone.
