James Harold Photography Interview

James Harold is a successful travel and portrait photographer who, according to his website, 'loves to create, capture and share.' He's also a big fan of Olympus kit, shooting primarily with the OM-D EM-5 and EPL-3.


You could say James' fondness for Olympus cameras began to materialise when he was a child thanks to his father owning Olympus kit:  "I still have fond childhood memories shooting with my fathers Olympus cameras and I know I will look back at this stage of my life and have many happy memories shooting with the OM-D," explains James.

James, who made the switch to Micro Four Thirds technology back in 2012, says the OM-D was and still is the 'first mirrorless camera that has a unique blend of functionality, quality and charm.' Plus, thanks to the camera's compact shape, it's ideal for street photography: "Due to its size, I find people are far more willing and relaxed which enables you to capture unique moments," says James. "The OM-D feels right at home out on the streets and with the optional grips and leather cases, you are able to create the feel you want."


A liking for Olympus kit wasn't the only thing that James discovered he had a passion for at a young age as it was at this time that he realised he loved to travel and immerse himself in local culture: "I found myself fascinated with the architecture, people and life in the places I visited and I personally feel when you have a passion for a subject and you shoot from your heart, you are able to produce your best work."


Among James' collection of images you'll find various styles of portraiture, the majority of which have been shot with Olympus gear. In fact, James has written a couple of blogs on using the OM-D in the studio, which can be found here.

"The OM-D's EVF (electronic view finder)  is such an amazing creative tool and when you couple this with the awesome prime lenses that Olympus has produced you have a killer portrait camera," says James.


James' OM-D will be put to the test again later this year on a couple of location portrait shoots in the UK as well as in a Mediterranean country. Plus, James already has four other overseas trips planned.
