Interview With Photographer Anthony Smith

Up until a few months ago, Anthony had never shot any model photography. Now though, his photos look great. Here, he tells us a bit about himself, and offers hints and tips for others wanting to get into the medium.

Anthony got into nude photography when he wanted to try something different with photography:"Landscapes and lighthouses are lovely, but I have done that for over 15 years," explains Anthony. "So I had a think about genres I hadn’t touched yet, and working with a model came to mind."

Anthony's love for nude photography grew out of doing model portraits. He has since worked with Luxuria 9 times. "We have done a lot of different work together, from a pin up strip tease to some art nude and location nude work," Anthony explains.

The human body seems to be a big inspiration for Anthony's photography: "I’m finding that I love the play of light, the interaction of the model with the surrounding area, and of course the human body is a beautiful thing, it should be seen. I have also worked with a lot of 'Alt' models, and I’m simply finding I like the style, the colour, and look. It’s quite amazing to find someone new and exciting to work with."

Setting up and taking a shot is quite a complicated process in this genre of photography, as Anthony explains: "The model and I usually chat a fair bit in advance, either on a previous shoot, via phone or by text or e-mail. Even Facebook chat is quite good for a quick 'what do you think of this idea?' as well as discussions.

After this, the what, where, when why and how of the shoot is finalised, before moving on to the actual shoot.

It’s just a little trial and error on the day, get the settings right and then go have some fun. I always start the shoot by having a scout around the location with the model, chatting as we go. It saves time later on if you have a couple of ideas in-mind before the model has to disrobe."

Anthony says the key thing if you are looking to get into this area of photography is to enjoy it, and make sure that the model enjoys it too. He has a check list of rules which he always sticks to, something we'll be featuring on site in the next couple of weeks.

"I’m being given the opportunity to practise something that is very difficult to get into, as the level of trust is quite high. It’s technically not easy, but is a fun and rewarding challenge," adds Anthony. "When you get it right in-camera, and the model simply says 'Wow', you know you have done something right, and good, and that makes it all worthwhile."
