ePHOTOzine member celebrates photography success: Photo by Dan Deakin Twenty-nine-year-old Dan Deakin entered the Digital Photographer Magazine's competition thinking he had nothing to lose and well, he didn't, walking away with the title Photographer of the Year 2008.

"I was very surprised to win.  It's funny that a lot of my images were taken on an elderly Nikon D50 - it's easy to get a bit too focused on kit (myself included). I guess it shows it's more about what you put in front of the camera than the camera itself. That said, I'm still planning to upgrade my current D200!"

All of the images he entered into the competition, which judges described as compelling and inspirational  have all appeared on ePHOTOzine and the comments from other members were pretty useful in optimising the images, as well as choosing which ones to submit for the competition.

"I entered a selection of 6 images in 3 categories, and somehow managed to win the overall competition.  I selected the images for the competition based on the feedback from the ePz members about each image. A lot of the images I entered were inspired by other users portfolio's here on ePHOTOzine."

Dan works for the NHS as a surgeon and his work means he travels as an expedition doctor quite a lot, something which allows him to carry out his love for travel and documentary style photography.

"A lot of my travel images were taken in Tanzania, Kilamanjaro, Peru and China. It's something I particularly enjoy doing and there's some excellent stuff on ePHOTOzine from other members at the moment that fit this description too."

I use Ephotozine's choices to help me choose my camera club entries as we don't always recognise the winning image ourselves.
Congratulations on your success.
