Inkjet Printers

Following on from the recently announced Epson Stylus Photo 950 the Stylus Photo 2100 is an impressive sounding A3+ printer which Epson are aiming at the photo-enthusiast, professional sector of the market. Claiming it offers the "highest photo quality available on the market today" it looks to help continue the surge in print quality that Canon started with their S800, S900 and S9000 series.

With an RRP of 599 it is certainly going to be one of the more expensive printers available and we're looking forward to getting a sample for testing.

For detailed information on the various features offered the full press release is included below.

Press release

25th April 2002 - EPSON created new benchmarks for photo-printing in 2000 with the launch of the award-winning STYLUS PHOTO 2000P. Now EPSON has once again developed new standards in photo printing with the launch of the Stylus Photo 2100.

The new seven colour, A3+ photo printer is a digital printing solution, designed for the advanced photo enthusiast and professional photographer. Replacing the STYLUS PHOTO 2000P it provides the highest photo quality available on the market today. It comes complete with an automatic paper cutter and will print directly onto CDs. Flexibility and ease of use is increased with the addition of a new paper-handling feature.

The STYLUS PHOTO 2100 uses seven colours to achieve its leading-edge photo quality. The revolutionary UltraChrome inkset is reformulated quick-dry pigment ink that provides improved colour gamut, gloss levels and longevity of between 45 and 75 years (dependent on media). These are cyan, magenta, yellow, light cyan, light magenta, light black and either standard or matte black. The introduction of light black as standard improves gradations to both colour and black and white images, widening the colour gamut to enhance greyscale and colour tonal gradations. The user then has an option of standard photo black or matte black depending on the output they require. Photo black will create high gloss levels on photographic media; matte black will provide optimum quality on plain, matte and fine art media.

The customer can easily switch between black inks. Each cartridge uses EPSON's Intellidge chip to store print data and allow each colour to be replaced and re-inserted at a later date. The Grey Balancer software allows users to calibrate the grey ink to suit their display conditions, ensuring prints can be fine-tuned to meet individual needs.

Hiromi Taba, EPSON's Vice President for Sales and Marketing of Finished Products for EMEA, says "The EPSON STYLUS PHOTO 2100 provides the very best quality output for any professional photographer. Its ink solution will provide users with a distinct advantage, they will have even more options to fine-tune and personalise their prints for unique results."

For those printing a number of photographs, the automatic cutter will be a huge benefit. The new feature will accurately cut photos on roll media allowing for fast continuous photo printing. And the inclusion of a paper catch basket ensures all the prints are collected safely.

Photographers often need to distribute their images via CD. The EPSON STYLUS PHOTO 2100 will print directly onto a CD, allowing the photographer to brand their digital images and personalise the CD for their client or customer. EPSON is the only manufacturer to offer this feature as standard on a photo printer.

The benefits don't stop here - improved paper handling means both roll and sheet media can be loaded at the same time. Users can chose to print from either paper source without having to adjust the paper path.

Taba also says, "EPSON holds the number one position in the photo printer market, this position is maintained because we continue to provide photographers with output to impress. The STYLUS PHOTO 2100 is no exception, offering photographers an affordable total digital printing solution."
