Eschenbach's 8x42 B Binoculars are designed for those interested in nature and bird observation that want a fuss-free, easy to use binocular. There are a total of 5 models available in the Arena range, including this one. These are: D+ 10x50 B, which we reviewed earlier this year, D+ 8x32 B, F+ 8x25 B and F+ 10x25 B. The F+ models are more compact.

Here, we see how the 8x42 binoculars perform.

Eschenbach Arena D+ 8x42 B Binoculars Features

The Arena D+ 8x42 binoculars have an aperture of 42mm and a magnification factor of x8. This makes them more compact than the 10x50 binoculars but only compromising a little on reach and the amount of light that they let in.

They have a robust design which feels great to hold and is very grippy. They are filled with nitrogen, to minimise condensation internally, and feature a roof prism model with silvered prisms to maximise brightness.

BaK-4 prisms are used, providing sharp and true to life images. The silvering improved the reflection by 4%. The eye cups can be twisted to make them protrude from the binoculars, making them easier to use with glasses. There is also dioptre adjustment.

The binoculars are provided with a padded neoprene neck strap, carry bag, cloth and 2 sets of protective rubber caps for either end of the binoculars.

Key Features

  • Nitrogen filled
  • Waterproof
  • Includes carry bag and neck strap
  • Silvered prisms for better reflection
  • 5-year warranty

Eschenbach Arena D+ 8x42 B Binoculars Handling & Performance

The binoculars feel really robust and well made. The outer is a rubbery, grippy surface and added ridges help give a firm hold. The focusing knob is smooth and well damped, with a nice amount of resistance.

The binoculars aren't what you'd class as lightweight, at 690g, however they won't weigh you down too much on your travels when worn around your neck. It's easy to adjust both the spectacle eyepieces and the dioptre adjustment until you can see clearly.

With a minimum viewing distance of 3m the binoculars proved ideal for bird spotting either in the back garden or in your local park. The twistable eye cups are great for optimising the binoculars if you wear glasses.

The image achieved is very clear and crisp with hardly any sign of fringing or aberration.

Value For Money

Eschenbach's Arena D+ 8x42 B binoculars are available for £119 from Amazon. This is a good price, considering the build quality and image quality you get from them. There are also a lot of adjustable features, which other brands miss.

Other 8x42 binoculars available include the Nikon Aculon A211, available for £59, but they aren't as compact as the Eschenbach offering. Alternatively, Carl Zeiss offer Terra ED 8x42 binoculars, featuring SCHOTT ED glass elements. The main drawback with these is the high price of £330.24.

Eschenbach Arena D+ 8x42 B Binoculars Verdict

Overall, Eschenbach's binoculars offer quality and a crystal clear view at a good price. Comfortable to hold, and supplied with their own bag and neck strap as well as a cleaning cloth, they're good value for money.

Ideal for bird or wildlife spotters who want a fuss-free binocular that they can easily set up for their vision, you can't really go wrong with Eschenbach's offering. If a higher magnification is something that you're after or a more compact design, there are a few different offerings in the range that should suit you.
