Events, races, festivals and open days to photograph in April.

If you're looking for places to go and photograph in April here's a few ideas to get you started.

There are hundreds of places you can visit and photograph during April but to get you started, we've put a list of interesting races, festivals and open days you can take your camera to.

Where will you go with your camera?
When: 3rd April
What: Oxford, Cambridge boat race
Where: Thames, London
Details: This Saturday is the annual Cambridge v Oxford Boat Race, which takes place on the river Thames from Putney to Mortlake.

The action takes place some way from the bank so you will need a long telephoto lens to get a decent-size image. Being on one of the bridges that spans the Thames is worth trying, but you will need to get there in plenty of time to grab a spot.

When: 5th April
What: London Harness Horse Parade
Where: South of England Centre, West Sussex
Details: The London Harness Horse Parade gives horse owners a chance to show of their best horses, ponies and donkeys. It's a chance for you to capture some horses on parade up close and in action.

When: 10th April
What: Grand National
Where: Aintree, Liverpool
Details: This famous steeplechase takes place during the three day event which starts on Thursday 8th April. It's an event full of excitement, drama and style both on and off the course. Of course there's the race action to capture but don't forget about the interesting and sometimes over the top outfits people are known to wear to this event.

What: Open Day at Shakespeare's Globe
Where: London
Details: From 12-4 the Shakespeare's Globe theatre opens its doors for free to the public. Plenty of events and activities always take place so there's plenty of chances to capture some great candids as well as interesting architectural shots.

When: 16th - 18th April
What: RHS Flower Show Cardiff
Where: Cardiff
Details: Take a walk around the inspirational show gardens, enjoy the sights in the floral marquees and capture the crowds who are guaranteed to fill the event.

When: 18th and 19th April
What: Jousting at Cressing Temple
Where: Essex
Details: This jousting event is just one of many St George's Day celebrations going on around the country. You can photograph the jousting, archery and falconry or just go along to enjoy a day that celebrates a time long forgotten.

When: 21st April
What: Queen's Birthday gun salutes
Where: London and Windsor
Details: At 12 noon the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery will fire a salute to celebrate the Queen's birthday. There will be a 41-gun salute in Hyde Park then a 62-gun salute will follow an hour later at the Tower of London. There will be plenty of ceremonial dress and spectacularly loud scenes for you to photograph.

What: Shakespeare Birthday Celebrations
Where: Stratford-upon-Avon
Details: Party games, birthday cake and card making are just some of the festivities you can join in and photograph. There's also the town's streets and riverside walks which have many photographic opportunities.

What: The London Marathon
Where: London
Details: Over the coming months, there will be the opportunity for some accessible sports photography on the form of road running events and the London Marathon is one of the biggest of them. 25th and 26th April
What: St George’s Day Festival
Where: Wrest Park, Bedfordshire
Details: The English Heritage has organising the biggest St George's Day event in the country. There'll be a reenactment, falconry and archery for you to photograph.

When: 30th April - 3rd May
What: Brixham Pirate and Shanty Festival
Where: Brixham
Details: Get your pirate gear on and head off to Brixham to photograph the crowds of people dressed in pirate fancy dress, enjoying the pirate-themed fun.
