Expensive Pro DSLR Camera & Lens vs Cheap Amateur DSLR Camera & Lens - Which Is Best?

Is it really worth spending thousands of pounds on photography kit? The School of Photography decided to find out in an in-depth head-to-head test.

The argument of how much money you need to spend on photography kit to capture a good photo is one that's been going on, for what seems like, forever and it's probably going to keep rolling on for some time to come. Many invest in expensive kit as they believe this is the way to ensure quality while others think it's all in the way you use the camera and not the camera itself that matters (what do you think? Let us know in the comments below).

Adding to the debate is The School of Photography who, earlier this year, shared a really great video that compares the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV with a 24-105mm L-series lens with a second-hand Canon EOS 1200D with a standard, EF-S 18-55mm lens. For those who don't know, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV combo retails for around £2799 while the Canon 1200D kit is worth around £150 on the second-hand market/ £299 on Amazon UK (at the time of writing).

"Does spending thousands of pounds extra really make your photography better?"

The video comparison is over 30-minutes long so you know it's going to be a real in-depth look at how both DSLRs perform. To really put them to the test, The School of Photography take the cameras on an urban portrait shoot and then they put them through their paces in low and bright light situations.

As well as watching the video, have a look at the images captured with each camera below so you can make your own mind up on which you think captured the better shots. Each shot was processed in Lightroom with presets you can get, for free, from The School of Photography website.

You should also take a look at The School of Photography YouTube channel where you'll find a tonne of interesting content.

Interesting comparison, in the pictures. Its also comparing what looks like kit lenses, i'm assuming that some of the quality and image smoothness characteristics come from the lens as well.
I've not seen the Vid yet but the comments suggest little difference.

One is FF the other APS-c so DOF is a potential for consideration. Other areas for comparison will be focus speed, frame rate ISO - in the example images few of these will come into play to any great extent though.

Noted, Good static portraits can be taken with many cameras and camera phones.
