A fan trying to take photos of competitors in the Tour of Italy race caused a crash that left one rider with a dislocated shoulder and another with a broken arm, AFP reports.

During stage six of the race, Daniele Colli was racing up the side of the road near barriers which spectators stand behind when he was struck by a camera a spectator was holding out over the barrier.

Ap reported: "The crash occurred in the final 300 meters as Daniele Colli hit the camera lens of a spectator leaning over the barrier and went down, bringing half the peloton down with him. Colli was immediately taken to a hospital and his team confirmed he broke his arm."

Not long after, Alberto Contador crashed with several other riders, resulting in a dislocated shoulder.

AFP say that TV replays confirmed the crash was caused by a spectator holding a camera out over the barrier and has once again raised concerns over security at events like this.

Here's video footage from the crash. WARNING: Contains imagery some may find unpleasant to view.

While there are a lot of idiots spectating at these events, it can't be hard to cone off a separation zone at the sides - at least in the finishing section when the riders are flat out and jockeying for position.
