Fathers can be notoriously difficult to buy for but surely there's more that he wants than the usual special toffee, a pair of socks or a new tool for the garden?

With this in-mind, why not try creating a photo-themed gift? There are several ways that you can get creative and make a gift your dad will love – that also means something personal to him, too.

Family Portraits

Take a look at our family and children photography articles listed here to get some tips on shooting quirky and memorable portraits. Giving your dad a portrait of you and/or your siblings as a Father's Day present is a thoughtful gift that if you take yourself, doesn't have to cost you a small fortune. In fact, if you produce a collection of different shots, you could even turn one into a card too.

Sports Photography

Most dads have a favourite sport, be it motor sport, cricket, boxing or football. Perhaps a montage of some creative shots involving his favourite sport would make a good present? While black and whites of bats and balls, boots or cars make interesting images that would look good in almost any room.

Take a look at our sports and action techniques for more tips on shooting sports.

Hobbies You Can Shoot

Maybe your dad is in to gardening? Or perhaps he likes spending lazy weekends on his narrow boat? Whatever his hobby, be it relaxing or active, there is always some form of photography that will complement it. Beautiful shots can be taken of boats and their surroundings, for example, or why not try shooting some landscapes of your Dad's favourite hiking spots?

As you can see, there's plenty of themes for a photographic present and photos will always make a more meaningful, personal present that will mean a lot more to him than that novelty mug!
