A magnificent lioness, a tiger on the prowl and a fish looking for love are the focus of some of the phenomenal images that have made the shortlist for the ever-popular Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.

This is the fifty-fourth time the Natural History Museum has ran the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition which celebrates nature, wildlife and animals of all shapes, sizes and variety.

The overall winners will be announced on 16 October at an awards ceremony in the Natural History Museum's iconic Hintze Hall and as always, after the winners have been announced, an exhibition will open at the Natural History Museum, in London, so you can see the images up close. This year's exhibition will open on 19 October 2019.
