Top Autumn Photo Ideas

At this time of year the days get shorter (boo!) but this also means the golden hours of the day, namely sunrise and sunset, are at much more agreeable times for you to head out and shoot the wonderful colours. Here are a few things you should have a go at shooting this Autumn: 

Winter sun - The low winter sun might be a pain when we're driving around with it in our faces, but it lets you capture some great images. If you usually commute to work, the sun will just be rising as you prepare to go, so spare a few minutes if you can to partake in some photography. You don't have to go far; a shot from your window over the neighbouring rooftops with the sunrise in the background can look great. Many Pentax cameras, including compacts, feature art filters or modes that'll help boost the colours of a sunrise shot. If you prefer to work filter free you can always give your images a boost when you're back in front of your computer. 

Frost - As the nights get longer and colder, the morning frost sets in. You'll have to rise early to capture this before it melts. Again an ideal opportunity might be to get up a few minutes earlier and take some shots before you head off to work. Frosty leaves and branches will look great as macro shots, and spider's webs will stand out more with frost on them too. 



Water - Autumn is a great time of year to head out and shoot some watery shots. You can make use of the autumnal colours by using them in reflections or capturing fallen leaves upon or in ice. Icy puddles and ponds can make great intricate subjects as well, but do be careful near ponds etc. that are iced over. 

Wildlife - The later start of the day also gives you the chance to take shots of the most shy animals at dawn and dusk with the wonderful autumn colours as a backdrop. Things like rabbits, foxes and deer will still be around for you to photograph, and if you're serious about good results it might be an idea to invest in a hide and a telephoto lens, such as the Pentax-DA 55-300mm, to get really up close to your subject. 

Events - In the autumn there are plenty of events to photograph, from the spooks and scares of Halloween to the colourful bursts of bonfire night which will soon be with. Head out and take some shots of fireworks going off and people trick or treating, as well as some still life shots of Halloween pumpkins and decorations; there's ample variety for photos at this time of year.
