Photographing Indoor Flowers With The K-50

The effect that hard and soft light has on flower images.

We have three lovely orchid plants in bloom at the moment in my house. This inspired me to have a go at some indoor flower photography with the Pentax K-50

I set the K-50 on a tripod in front of the flowers, making sure that there was minimal clutter in the background. I used a relatively large aperture, making sure that the flower head was in focus but the rest of the plant was nicely thrown out.

The orchids are in a room which gets a lot of natural sunlight throughout the day, and so the first photos I took had very harsh shadows due to the sunlight streaming through the window:

Whilst I was pleased with this image, the light streaming in from the right of the frame creates shadows on the flower petals which I felt ruined the symmetry a little.

Softer light was needed to create a more classic image. To create softer light you need to diffuse it through some light coloured material before it hits the subject. The easiest way for me to do this was to draw the blinds. I still had enough ambient light coming into the room with the blinds drawn, so I had another go:

Although this image has less depth, I think it makes the flower look a lot more pleasing to the eye. The K-50 displays how the image will look on the live view screen when you alter the aperture and shutter speed settings in manual mode, making it simple to make creative decisions.
