Fujifilm Fujinon XF 8-16mm f/2.8 R LM WR MTF Charts

How to read our MTF charts

The blue column represents readings from the centre of the picture frame at the various apertures and the green is from the edges.

The scale on the left side is an indication of actual image resolution and sharpness as LW/PH and is described in detail above. The taller the column, the better the lens performance.

For this review, the lens was tested on a Fujifilm X-T3 using Imatest. Want to know more about how we review lenses?

CA (Chromatic Aberration) is virtually banished at all focal lengths, either through brilliant lens design or including in-camera corrections that cannot be switched off. Either way, the result is totally clean with no discernible colour fringing.

Fujifilm Fujinon XF 8-16mm f/2.8 R LM WR Chromatic Aberration Charts

How to read our CA charts

Chromatic aberration (CA) is the lens' inability to focus on the sensor or film all colours of visible light at the same point. Severe chromatic aberration gives a noticeable fringing or a halo effect around sharp edges within the picture. It can be cured in software.

Apochromatic lenses have special lens elements (aspheric, extra-low dispersion etc) to minimize the problem, hence they usually cost more.

For this review, the lens was tested on a Fujifilm X-T3 using Imatest.

Distortion measures +0.34% pincushion at 8mm, +0.90% pincushion at 10mm, -0.52% barrel at 12mm and -0.08% barrel at 16mm. These are excellent results, but having a lens with pincushion distortion at its widest lengths is a little odd and the opposite of what our eyes would normally expect. Fortunately, the figures are low, so it is not intrusive in the images.

Bokeh is probably not what we are looking for here, as ultra-wide lenses are usually used at smaller apertures to keep as much in sharp focus as possible. Where selective focus is required, the smooth gradation of the out of focus areas is good, but not as amazing as a telephoto lens might deliver.

Flare resistance has always been good with Fujifilm lenses, and this is no exception. In fact, the results are extraordinary, especially considering the large number of elements. Flare is almost totally under control, with clean results against even the strongest light.

Vignetting is surprisingly modest, returning some remarkably low figures across the focal length range.

Aperture 8mm 10mm 12mm 16mm
f/2.8 -1.4 -1.2 -1.1 -0.8
f/4 -1.4 -1.2 -1 -0.8
f/5.6 -1.3 -1.2 -0.9 -0.6
f/8 -1.2 -1.1 -0.6 -0.5
f/11 -1.1 -1 -0.5 -0.5
f/16 -1.1 -1 -0.5 -0.4
f/22 -1 -0.9 -0.5 -0.4

Overall, an excellent performance across the whole range of focal lengths and a superb example of fine lens design.

Sigh...I was hoping to change my 10-24 f/4 for this, but the price is too high, unfortunately...it would complement my 16-80mm perfectly...
