Fujifilm GFX 100 Will Capture 400MP Images After Camera Firmware Update

A GFX System firmware update will bring new technology to the In-Body Image Stabilisation (IBIS) feature found on the GFX100 so it will be able to capture 400MP images.

The news was announced at the Fujifilm X Summit in London where the firmware update/new technology was discussed in some detail before the Fujifilm X100V and Fujifilm XT-4 cameras were announced.

On the current GFX100, the IBIS system works under a micrometre order and because of pixel pitch, each pixel measure 3.7 micrometres but Fujifilm is now working on a sub-micrometre order control which they're hoping will mean they can reach a target pixel pitch that is 10x smaller.

As a result, this new sub-micrometre order control will mean the GFX100 can capture 400MP images, using a pixel shift multi-shot mode

Basically, by shooting more pixels, at a sub-pixel level, in between where the existing pixels would be, will result in an image with more information recorded in the frame, which Fujifilm demonstrates at around the 40-minute mark in the X Summit video

No details have been confirmed on when the firmware update will be available.
