Fujifilm’s medium-format system, the Fujifilm GFX 50s, has a 51-megapixel medium format CMOS sensor, and is a new medium format mirrorless camera system with a weather sealed body. Fujifilm announced the new camera at Photokina 2016, and it's been confirmed today that the new camera will be available on 23 February 2017 with an RRP of £7600 (with lens).

While we wait to put the GFX 50s through a full test, have a read of our hands-on below.

Fujifilm GFX 50S Key Features:

  • 51.4-megapixel medium format CMOS sensor
  • 43.8 × 32.9mm sensor, 5.3micron pixel size
  • X Processor Pro image processor
  • Fujifilm GF lens mount
  • Interchangeable electronic viewfinder (EVF)
  • 1/4000s shutter speed, 1/125s flash sync
  • 15 types of Film Simulation
  • Multiple aspect ratio options: 4:3 (default, 51.4mp), 3:2 45.4mp, 1:1 38.3mp, 5:4 48mp, 7:6 48mp, 16:9 38.3mp, and 6:17
  • Weather and dust resistant system
  • Rear screen tilts up/down as well as vertically
  • Top LCD screen

Designed to give the option of a compact medium format camera, as you can use it without the electronic viewfinder or with the EVF. The camera has been designed with good ergonomics in mind, with a deep grip at the front, a thumb grip at the rear, and a slight slope at the bottom of the camera, to ensure a good grip. By incorporating the shutter in to the camera body, Fujifilm say they are able to make their lenses smaller. They also plan to make it possible to shoot with leaf-shutter lenses.

Fujifilm GFX Medium Fortmat (7)

The GFX is said to be the same size as a full-frame Digital SLR, and gives side access to the battery and memory card compartments, even when you have the camera attached to a tripod. This will be particularly useful for when using the camera in a studio tethered.

Fujifilm Gfx 50s Sensor

Fujifilm say that the medium format sensor has been customised for Fujifilm, with improved micro lens shape, and an optimised silicon process.

The camera and optional battery grip is optimised for use vertically as well as horizontally. On top of the camera you can find mechanical ISO and shutter speed dials. You can use the dials, or alternatively control the shooting settings using camera controls. The Top LCD display lights up in blue, and shows settings even when the camera is switched off.

Fujifilm plan to have a total of 6 lenses in 2017, as well as various adapters for other lenses. All lenses are dust and weather sealed, with brass lens mount construction.

Now, now Hasselblad, competition knocks the door.

The blue LCD with the white lettering reminds me Leica

Nice body design

I don't usually get excited about cam gear. But as an X-system user, this has just brought a smile to my face

Still with an OPTIONAL grip at 10K. Fuji stay with the nickel and dime approach.

At least you'll get a hood with the lenses, unlike Canon.

True Medium Format sensor size should be about 3.5x full frame 35mm sensor ( like film days )
100 mp should be the way to go instead of cropped 51 mp!
If Fujifilm wants to make the most compact MF camera these are what they should be doing to save weight / reduce size ( learn from Leica / etc )>
A) body corners should be rounded to reduce unnecessary extra weight ( more comfy to hold as a result / less corner wear too ! )
B) lens options should be more optimized >
1) 30-60 F5.6 WR ois WIDE ZOOM ( 14-28 F2.8 35mm format )- most useful range
2) 100 F2 WR PORTRAIT LENS ( 80 F1 35mm format )- like Leica 80 F1.4 R lens - most compact ! super bokeh !!
3) 50 F2.8 WR STANDARD LENS ( 40 f1.4 35mm format ) closer to eye view angle/ more compact & lighter too
4) 25 F5.6 WR EXTRA WIDE ( 20mm F2.8 35mm format ) 90 degree dual eyes stereo view angle ! great for interiors
and why contrast focus ? should stick to phase detect
If Fujifilm would apply the above much greater appeal & sales success would be achieved !
I would be among the first to like to own the system !

Fujifilm logo should be in embossed metal ( classier / prestige IMAGE )
Body should be more rubberized ( eg S1 / NIKON F5? )
Price them to be super competitive & full frame SLR owners would move over in hoards !!!
( end of 35mm era - MF the new norm !!! )

typo error correction for first comment above >
1) should be 18-36 F5.6 WR ois ultimate wide zoom ( 14-28 F2.8 )
1B ) 30-60 F4 WR ois WIDE ZOOM ( 24-48 F2 35mm format )

I love preview images i've seen elsewhere on this.
If in body you get "15 types of Film Simulation" doe this mean jpeg outputs, if Raw outputs do files like this even go into Lightroom etc?
FPS - I assume quite low - 2?

Thanks Josh
WOW - I looooove the look and the detail this gives - Does the pawn shop still accept souls?
Who wants FF any more for staged shots like these. Love the detail zoom possible too.

That action shot at 125th Sec seems to have frozen movement - is movement freezing better with bigger sensors - or was this movement frozen by flash?
