We take a look at the second generation of Fujifilm's Instax wireless printer.
| Fujifilm Instax Share SP-2 in Instant Printer
The Fujifilm Instax Share SP-2 is the second generation of Fujifilm's wireless smartphone printer - we reviewed the SP1 back in June 2014. The SP2 brings new features and improvements over the old model, but at its core, it does the same thing - let you print your smartphone photos wirelessly onto a credit card sized Instax film. Find out how it performs here.
Fujifilm Instax Share SP-2 Features
The Fujiflm Instax Share SP-2 is a portable instant printer that connects wirelessly to your smartphone via an app. You can then customise and prepare your smartphone photos to print onto Instax film the size of a credit card.
New features on the SP-2 compared to the SP-1 include:
- Reprint button
- New templates for images on the app
- Can connect to certain Fujifilm X series cameras directly
- Improved DPI / sharpness of images
The printer is a pretty simple design - most of the alterations and changes are made in the app. On the back is a slider allowing you to open up the printer and insert the film pack. 10 images can be achieved out of one pack.
On the left-hand side, there is the power button, reprint button, and the USB charging slot which is covered by a cap. On the front are the indicators for the battery life and how many photos are left in the pack.
When you turn on the printer you'll be able to find it on the free smartphone app, available for iOS and Android, and get connected. The most noticeable new feature on the SP-2 is the reprint button. The last sent image to the printer is saved and by pressing the reprint button, you can replicate it as many times as you like. The image even stays saved if you turn the printer off.
Key Features
- Print smartphone images
- Wi-Fi connectivity to smart device
- Edit images and choose frames in the app before printing
- Quick 10 second print time
- Print your images from social media sites as well as your phone's gallery
- Reprint button to print the same image several times
Fujifilm Instax Share SP-2 Handling
The printer and app are simple to use. Just press the power button on the printer and load the app. When the app loads, you have the option to choose images from your phone gallery, reprint the image, take a new image or draw images from your social media accounts by logging in through the app. You can browse your photos and prepare them for print before you turn the printer on.
When you've selected your picture, a preview of what it will look like appears. You can then customise the image by altering its position in the frame, adding filters or adding a template with text if you wish. There are lots to choose from and you can browse these by pressing the pencil in the top right then selecting either 'Template', 'Edit the picture' or 'Filters'.
When you're ready to print your images, you can press 'Connect and print'. At this point, you'll need to turn the printer on by pressing and holding the power button fo 1 second. Go into your device's Wi-Fi settings and select the printer to connect to it. It'll be called 'INSTAX XXXX'. In the app, pressing 'connect and print' will search for the printer and when it's found, you can select it. You'll be asked for a pin, which is set at 1111 unless you change it. Input this, and your image will print. While you stay connected to the printer, you'll simply be able to press a green 'Print' button at the bottom of the screen for the rest of your images.
Charging the printer battery takes around 90 minutes but there is no indication of how long it's meant to last. You can check the remaining battery by the colour of the LED. When it's green there is good charge, red means you should charge it and flashing red means the battery is dying.
