Compact Cameras

August sees the UK launch of the new Fujifilm FinePix 50i multimedia digital camera - the super slim, MP3 playing successor to the popular FinePix 40i.

The newly designed ultra-compact camera is less than one inch wide and sports a host of features including an iMac(tm) inspired new desktop download cradle; audio recording and voice captioning; a brighter LCD screen and a new MP3 remote controller.
Powered by Fujifilm's 2.47m pixel Super CCD sensor and with new LSI signal processing, the FinePix 50i delivers an output resolution of up to 4.3million pixels (2400x1800), and boasts enhanced colour reproduction, sharpness and sensitivity. The Fujinon EBC autofocus lens is equivalent to a 36mm on a 35mm camera, which is shielded when not in use by a spring-loaded lens and flash cover, and Fuji say the operation of the function buttons has been made even easier by the elegant design.

To aid viewing of captured images in sunny conditions the FinePix 50i sports a bright, high-definition 1.5inch 110,000 pixel TFT LCD monitor, while the trim new lines of the slender wallet-sized camera have been made possible by a new super slim Lithium-Ion battery, which also means the silver-bodied FinePix 50i tips the scales at just 160grams.

Near-CD quality playback is offered by the built-in MP3 player and a silver-coloured high-tech remote control displays track song titles. The camera also features a digital video capability, capturing up to 80-second bursts of AVI Motion JPEG action with audio.

Further multimedia functions have been added to the FinePix 50i, with the inclusion of a voice recording function, with the ability to record up to six hours of audio on a 128Mb SmartMedia card, and voice captioning allowing users to record audio descriptions for individual saved images to create an audio picture diary. There is even a party mode setting that is a noise-activated shutter release function.

For Internet users, video-conferencing has been included in the camera's repertoire with the new desktop PC-sync PictureCradle. The transparent desktop cradle allows the camera to be used as a 'webcam' for video-conferencing by linking the user's PC via a USB connection, while the press of a button automatically activates the FinePix Viewer software on the linked computer, for swift viewing and image transfer.  As with the FinePix 4800 and 6800 Zoom models, the cradle also automatically recharges the camera's Lithium-Ion battery.

The PictureCradle and FinePix Viewer software also provide a seamless link to the FinePix Internet Service website, which offers users instant access to the Internet, easy on-line registration for warranty cover, and a huge cache of information, advice and help available 24 hours a day.

'Multi-functional devices such as this are definitely setting a trend,' says Fuji Photo Film UK's Digital Marketing Manager Michelle da Gama, ' and while the new FinePix 50i can perform all these different functions, it is first and foremost a fantastic little camera that produces superb quality digital images.

'But why in addition to a high quality digital camera should you want to carry an MP3 player, Dictaphone or video camera when you can combine them all in one incredibly small, stylish and amazingly high-quality piece of equipment like the FinePix 50i?'
