The new Fujifilm Fujinon XF 50mm f/1.0 R WR lens gives a 76mm equivalent (in 35mm equivalent terms) when mounted on an X-Mount camera, such as the Fujifilm X-T4. The lens is the World's first f/1.0 AF lens for mirrorless cameras, and it uses face and eye AF to improve focus accuracy even when shooting at f/1.0.

The lens has been designed to give soft and beautiful bokeh, as well as improved operability of manual focus, with a large focus ring, with improved feel and throw. To get from infinity to minimum focus distance requires a 120-degree turn of the focus ring. Fujifilm has designed the lens to give a reasonable size and weight, as well as price, considering it is an "ultra-fast" f/1.0 autofocus lens. The lens is not necessarily a "showpiece" in terms of price, and Fujifilm has priced the lens so that it is affordable and can actually be used.

Fujifilm say that at f/1.0 the spherical aberration is intentionally left to soften the bokeh, and at f1/2, the resolution is said to be equivalent to the XF 56mm f/1.2 lens.

The lens gives a soft and beautiful bokeh making it ideal for portrait photography, and we found that the face and eye-detection focus continued to work well, even at f/1.0. Giving us detailed, and correctly focused photos for our portrait shots. When shooting at f/1.0 the image gives very smooth bokeh and background blur, and this continues even when stopping down, although you do get the benefit of the image becoming even sharper when stopped down.

The lens does not feature a linear motor, as this would have added to the weight and size of the lens. For the same reason, the lens does not feature optical image stabilisation, so will benefit from being paired with a Fujifilm camera with built-in image stabilisation, such as the X-T4 and X-H1. However, saying this, the bright f/1.0 aperture will also help avoid any kind of camera shake, helping you get a faster shutter speed.

The motor used for focus is quite audible, and from our time testing this lens, we found that it was quite easily picked up by the camera when recording video, therefore we'd recommend the use of manual focus if you are planning on using this lens for video work.
