Getting creative with filters isn't difficult where there are such a wide range of filters out there to make your photographs unique. From subtle to more brash effects, here we go through the special effects filters available for both square and round filter systems.

Star filters - Star filters add cross flare to light sources in your images, allowing for more dramatic looking lights. They can be used to add a bit more interest to night shots, as well as in the daytime to a more abstract feel. Hoya star filters are available in 4,6 and 8-point varieties.

Infrared - This infrared filter is designed for use with infrared film, which can also be sensitive to ultraviolet rays and the shorter wavelengths of the visible spectrum, so the filter is necessary to filter out all but the infrared rays. Infrared allows you to see the world in a whole new way and is brilliant for landscapes there the terrain can often look alien and surreal.

Fog/mist effects - These filters can create the effect of dense fog. The mist filter is a more subtle option to add a more soft focus feel to your images, ideal for portraits.

Rainbow filters - Available in two different styles, the rainbow filters enable you to add a rainbow to a scene, anywhere, anytime. They require a small aperture to work, but then can brighten up a scene no matter that the weather.

Pre-shaped frames - These are ideal for when you don't want to spend a long time post processing your images after shooting as you can simply add the shaped frame you'd like to use to the front of your camera. This can help when trying to frame your subject for a specific shape. There are various shaped frame filters available from Cokin, including an oval, large heart, small heart, keyhole and binoculars.

Rainspot  - This filter allows you to create the effect of heavy rain with centre spot and lateral effect. It's great for more abstract images where there's a central point you want to focus on while blurring the surroundings in a unique way.
