Furr Mankowitz

In Holland Park on the central line in London, the super slick After Nyne Gallery is hosting a rather special Olympus sponsored exhibition. It’s a creative collaboration between the renowned music photographer Gered Mankowitz and the highly sort after portrait painter Christian Furr. This 45 PRM FurrMankowitz exhibition is a fresh presentation of contemporary reimagining, styling and colouring that can be applied to classic black and white images. Stuart Fawcett went along for ePHOTOzine to find out more about the exhibition.

One image can change us.

A picture, a moment can change the way we feel. Change how we see ourselves. Change our understanding and change the rules. Provoke and change history.

MPB Gear

MPB puts photo and video kit into more hands, more sustainably. Every month, visual storytellers sell more than 20,000 cameras and lenses to MPB. Choose used and get affordable access to kit that doesn’t cost the earth.

Sell the kit you’re not using to MPB. Trade in for the kit you need to create. Buy used, spend less and get more.

Buy. Sell. Trade. Create.

One particular music legend that joined Gered and Christian for the gallery’s private viewing was Rolling stones bass guitarist Bill Wyman and his wife Suzanne Accosta. Gered has been around Bill and the rolling stones for over 50 years now.

Of course there were lots of other guests too, including film makers, printers, teachers, local collectors and photographers such as Peter Dench and Olympus ambassador Marcus Clackson.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is how a single base image gets individually transformed into a set of similar but differently toned and treated images. Initially at a quick glance you might see bright pop art colour versions of an image, but you need to look deeper and see that actually Christian and Gered have collaborated on each individual image with each artist reflecting the creativity of the other and mirroring the presentation of the first such that its hard to see where one contribution ends and the other begins.

Each hand finished image contains a selection of elements - pigment prints on quality etching paper or aluminium with tinted gold leaf, acrylics, oils, air ink and pastels and even diamond dust finishes. These pieces are not cheap to make or to buy - but I’d love to be an art collector displaying a set of 4 identical but different hand finished versions of any one particular classic image.

The exhibition is only on until 22nd May at the After Nyne Gallery so you need to be quick to see it. This is a bright warm cosy gallery that offers a real depth and breadth of artistic creativity. Keep an ear out for what else After Nyne does, it seems quite exciting.
