Gitzo Traveler Kit GK0545T-82TQD Tripod Handling & Performance

The Gitzo 0 Series Traveler kit feels really robust and well made, with lovely smooth and well-damped leg joints. There is a reassuring click when legs fall into place and it's easy to push the clip to the side and fold the legs back up to storage position too.

The Traveler G-Lock grips on the leg sections are super grippy and are an ideal shape for most fingers. They look like they'd be equally as easy to use when wearing gloves in cold weather too.

The ball head has 3 knobs, all of which again are well damped and easy to operate, with the panning motion feeling really fluid and smooth. Even when fully loosened, the WS2 coated ball joint whilst being really easy to move retains some friction so your attached kit shouldn't be in danger. When the ball head is locked, it's near impossible to get it to move.

Having a knob for the release plate which your camera fastens on to is a nice touch and does away with awkward lever latch releases which can be fiddly.

When the tripod is at full height, it feels great and sturdy with the rubber feet on the bottom doing an excellent job of keeping it in one place. We attached a Panasonic Lumix GX7 to the tripod but with a max load of 10kg it could have easily supported a DSLR with a hefty lens on the end.

Gitzo provide you with a bull hide leather strap for carrying the tripod and there are two ways in which you can attach it, one by looping both ends around the metal loop built into the stem to achieve a vertical carrying position, and the other by looping one end around the metal loop and using the velcro to wrap around the folded feet resulting in a horizontal tripod holding position. The strap looks classy and the shoulder pad has a suede underside for softness and grip.

Also provided with the tripod are 4 allen keys to fit the various nuts and bolts on the tripod. This allows you to be able to fix any loosening or remove parts for replacement or cleaning, without having to send the tripod away. Gitzo is keen that their tripods be an investment for life and want to empower you to be able to maintain it so it will last a long time. Even the G-Lock tighteners will unscrew completely and come off to enable cleaning and the feet can be unscrewed and replaced when they get worn or you require spikes etc rather than rubber pads.

The thinness of the legs compared to the stiffness achieved is quite astonishing, due in part to innovations in Carbon eXact material used to make the tripod lighter and stronger.

Value For Money

The Gitzo Traveler Kit GK0545T-82TQD on test here costs £749 and can be pre-ordered through WEX. This is definitely a high-end price but it's made from the best materials around, is compact, lightweight and looks great too.

Other tripods to consider include the Manfotto 055 Carbon Pro, which is their top of the range offering and costs £400, but it weighs more, and is nowhere near as compact and neat. There is also the Manfrotto Befree Carbon Fibre which is more compact than the 055 but still has clip latch leg locks and is available for £279. If you're looking for something more compact than the Giottos YTL 9253 featuring a Y-Tube centre column at £74.90 might be an option. However, it only has a max weight capacity of 5kg.

The tripod is definitely one of the best build quality and finish we've ever seen and if you can spare the cash will no doubt be a long lasting tripod that you could even pass down to the next generation.

Gitzo Traveler Kit GK0545T-82TQD Tripod Verdict

The Gitzo Traveller Kit is a really well built tripod and head that features the latest in carbon fibre innovations to make it lighter, thinner and at the same time sturdier, which is really quite an impressive feat.

Some may be put off by the price of the tripod but when you consider that it's designed to last you a lifetime, maybe even longer, with the ability to replace parts and maintain the tripod yourself without sending it off to be repaired it represents a good investment.

Everything just feels quality, from the smoothness of the pan action and Traveler G-Lock leg twists to the mechanism that clicks the legs into place. You won't be disappointed with this tripod. It also comes with a strap and fabric carry bag, which is a bonus, and it's small enough to be stored in, or attached to a rucksack without too much hassle. If you want a high quality and reliable tripod for your kit, then this is the one for you. We are happy to highly recommend it.
