The Google Pixel 4 smartphone has been officially announced with Google opting to add a second camera to the rear of its new camera phone which brings them more in-line with other smartphone manufacturers who opt for dual, triple or even quad-camera set-ups nowadays.

As well as the Google Pixel 4, there's also the Google Pixel 4 XL which is bigger (screen and body) than the basic model and has a higher price £829 instead of £669

Before we get into the specs, the Google Pixel 4 and Google Pixel 4 XL smartphone will be available from 24 October 2019 from the Google store in Just Black, Clearly White and Oh So Orange

Google Pixel 4 Camera Unit

We got a sneak-peek at the Google Pixel 4 and the shape of the camera unit hasn't changed since Google released the image back in June. In the unit you find a 45mm 16MP f/2.4 lens with a 52-degree field-of-view and a 28mm 12.2MP f/1.7 lens with a 77-degree field of view. Both lenses have optical as well as electronic image stabilisation and autofocus with phase detection. There's no ultra-wide-angle lens which is another step away from the norm as most other smartphones released in 2019 do have one.

This is the first time we're seeing as dual-camera set-up on the Google Pixel smartphone range as previously, the Google Pixel 3 and the Pixels that came before it just had the one rear camera supported by some really clever technology. We still expect to see the clever technology built-in, it's just that it works alongside dual cameras now.

On the front is a 22mm 8MP f/2.0 fixed focus lens with a 90-degree field of view, NIR flood emitter, NIR dot projector and 2 NIR cameras. It also features Auto-HDR to give your selfies/group shots better overall dynamic range.

Video is captured at 1080p @ 30 FPS, 60 FPS, 120 FPS, 720p @ 240 FPS and 4K @ 30 FPS. The front camera also records at 1080p @ 30 FPS.

Google Pixel 4 Camera App Features

Improvements have been made to the Night Sight function found in the Pixel 4 camera app and this includes adding an Astrophotography function which uses long exposures and some clever software to capture images of the night sky. You do need a tripod, or similar support, as exposures will be up to 4 minutes in some cases.

As well as Night Sight, you get access to Dual Exposure controls which you can use live not just in post-production, Live HDR+ to enhance images with better dynamic range, Social Share so you can images to social media channels without leaving the camera app and Frequent Faces which learns/remembers the faces you photograph the most and the camera will automatically capture shots where those faces are in focus. The Pixel 4 also lets you adjust the exposure balance of
different parts of the photos separately.

The Google Pixel 4 smartphone uses a combination of optical zoom (2x) from the second rear camera with Super Res Zoom software (originally launched in the Pixel 3) to provide improved image quality. Simply double-tap from the viewfinder to zoom or spread your thumb and forefinger apart in one motion on the screen (as you do with other camera apps).

As there are two smartphones in the Google Pixel 4 range, you get two size options, as well as slightly different weights and different displays. On the Google Pixel 4 the screen measures 5.7'' and is an FHD+ flexible OLED while the Google Pixel 4 XL has a 6.3" QHD+ flexible OLED but both are constructed from Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

The Pixel 4 measures 68.8 x 147.1 x 8.2 mm and weighs 162g while the Google Pixel 4 XL measures 75.1 x 160.4 x 8.2 mm and weighs 193g.

Other features include Stereo front and bottom-firing speakers, face unlock, USB-C,64GB or 128GB options and fast charge for the 2800mAh battery on the Pixel 4 and 3700mAh battery on the Google Pixel 4 XL.

Take a look at sample images from Google, captured on the Google Pixel 4, below. For a less expensive Google Pixel option, have a look at the Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL priced at £399 and £469, respectively.
