Google has introduced the Google Pixel 4/Pixel 4 XL smartphone and with it comes an improved Night Sight mode which Google says can be used to capture photos of the Milky Way.

The Night Sight mode isn't a new feature in the Pixel 4 camera app but Google has been working on improving the mode so it can be used to photograph the night sky, stars and even a galaxy. 

"Night Sight already helps you take beautiful photos in full darkness, and now, we're turning to the stars," says Google.

Google has shared images of the night sky captured with the Google Pixel 4 smartphone and they do look good but the tech giant hasn't said what sort of processing has gone on to create the final images. They do, however, give a few tips on how you should set your smartphone up when using the Night Sight to capture images of the Night Sky:

1. Go to a very dark area (travel away from the city lights, and start shooting 90 minutes or more after sunset).
2. Prop your phone on a steady surface, like a rock or tripod. 
3. When your phone is perfectly still, tap Capture.
4. Don’t touch your phone until it’s finished taking photos. Your phone will show a countdown timer. Optional: To stop taking a photo, tap Stop.

Google has also said that it will be working on bringing a version of this new Night Sight capability to the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3a with the latest camera app update.

The Google Pixel 4 and Google Pixel 4 XL smartphone will be available from 24 October 2019 from the Google store priced at £669 and £829, respectively. The Google Pixel 3A is currently available for £389 over on Amazon UK.
