Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Award: HIPA 2012
The second season of the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA), with a grand prize of $120,000 and an overall prize pool of $389,000 up for grabs, is now open for entries.

The competition, which boasts having the largest prize money of any photography competition anywhere in the world, has four categories: 'Beauty of Light', 'The United Arab Emirates', 'Black and White' and 'The General Category'. A maximum of four entries per person is allowed, with one entry for each category available.

Two special accolades, the Photography Appreciation Award (Personal, Group or Team Award) and the Photographic Research/Report Award, will also be presented after the competition closes at midnight on 31 December 2012 (All times and dates are based on UAE standard times and dates). The Photography Appreciation Award has a prize value of $20,000 and the Photographic Research/Report Award winner will receive $25,000.

The grand prize at this year’s Hamdan International Photography Award will be dedicated to the 'Beauty of Light' in photography. There are no restrictions on what photographers submit for this category, so long as the influence of light is clearly demonstrated. The winner of the award will be the photographer who successfully illustrates an effective use of light in their submission.

The United Arab Emirates category was specifically designed for photographers to test their appreciation of the United Arab Emirates and its many icons through photography. From its unique desert dunes to the sky high towers of the sprawling business districts, photographers are challenged to capture the many wonders found in the United Arab Emirates.

Next is the 'Black and White' category which the competition organisers have included for photographers to show off their abilities and to deliver a strong and lasting message in black and white.

The general category of the competition is left open for competitors to show off their overall photography skills without any boundaries or restrictions. Competitors are open to submit any photograph they’ve captured which may not be eligible for any of the three other categories.

Three winners from each of the Emirati and international pools of talent will be picked for the 'General' category (6 winners in total) while three overall winners will be chosen from all nationalities for the 'Emirates' and 'Black and White' categories. The reason for having three Emirati winners in the 'General' category is to support and build the confidence of local Emirati photographers, and encourage them to continue in the field.

About the award:
Launched in 2011 by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, The Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA) has immediately become an internationally renowned photography competition. Conceived as an initiative to establish a prestigious International Photography Award in Dubai, targeting the huge sector of talented and passionate people who have chosen photography as an expressive art form.

The HIPA awards are a major contributor to Dubai’s drive of artistic and cultural excellence and have already begun to achieve its patron’s aspirations, to transform Dubai into a base for the development and acknowledgement of excellence in photography.

The award also aims to enhance educational programs that involve various elements of photography, by expanding and collaborating with local and international groups in related fields. By educating society in the art of photography, a desired growth in photographic interest will take place, and lead more local and international participants to take part in photography fairs and contests.

For its second season, the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award will take to the international stage by attending some of the world’s most prestigious photography events. The award’s participation at PHOTOKINA 2012 reflects the ambitions it has at reaching some of the world’s leading photographers and inviting them to compete.

"We are proud to present the second season of the award 'Beauty of Light' with the blessings of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and the Governor of Dubai. The award’s vision of expanding the art of photography on a local and international level falls right in line with His Highness’ Dubai Strategic Plan for 2015, which is to enrich the cultural environment by identifying and nurturing talent in our communities," said Sahar Al Zarei, Assistant Secretary General.
