Honor is the first smartphone company to announce the arrival of a 48-megapixel smartphone that's also missing a top-notch (the front-facing camera is built directly into the display) so the screen, almost, offers 100% area coverage.

The Honor View20 has a 48-megapixel rear camera that features a Sony IMX586 sensor and the Kirin 980 chipset (with dual-NPU) is built in so those using the smartphone will be able to take advantage of a 48-megapixel AI HDR mode. Couple these with the AI computing power that's built into Honor smartphones and you have a very promising set-up for photography.

The Sony sensor built-in features Quad Bayer technology which improves low-light performance by combining neighbouring pixels so, effectively, the pixel size is increased from 0.8microns to 1.6microns, giving you a 12-megapixel image (in low light).

Unlike smartphones we've seen to date with dual, triple or even quad-cameras, the Honor View20 only has the 48-megapixel camera built-in so it'll definitely be interesting to see how it performs once review samples are made available.

As for the screen, as we've come to expect, the bezels are getting smaller and the screen area coverage bigger with the introducing, of what Honor is calling, the 'Honor All-View Display.' Instead of having a top-notch with the front-facing camera built-in, Honor has embedded the selfie camera (which measures just under 4.5mm in diameter) into the screen, extending the display area to almost 100% - impressive.

Honor also introduced Link Turbo at the event - a new technology that combines Wi-Fi and 4G use to give you a faster connection when sharing public networks.

No more specs have been revealed, yet, so we'll have to wait for the official launch in January when the full details will be revealed.

Honor isn't the only smartphone brand releasing a 48-Megapixel camera phone with the President of Xiaomi sharing an image of a smartphone with the words '48MP CAMERA' written on it. Samsung also debuted the Samsung Galaxy A8s smartphone with a camera cutout yesterday.
