Huawei, and their more budget-friendly line Honor, have been making waves in the Android smartphone market for a while now and with the introduction of a 48MP Honor smartphone (Honor View20), they're definitely not a brand that's stepping out of the spotlight any time soon.

Their smartphones are particularly well known for having really good cameras built into them and as the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, Huawei P20 Pro and the latest Honor View20 have all scored well in our reviews, we thought we'd put the three devices head-to-head to see which of Huawei's/Honor's smartphones really does take the best photos.

We have to say that you probably won't be disappointed with any of the three smartphones as they all offer good specs and plenty of creative shooting possibilities that will certainly keep the majority of people very happy.

Let's have a look at how the specs for each smartphone line-up before moving on to find how the smartphones compare when capturing the same photos. There's also a comparison specifications table at the end so you can see the specs for each smartphone side-by-side.

Even though it's a little oversharpened, the Huawei Mate20 Pro has captured, we think, the best result. Colours are accurate and everything just pops that little bit better from the frame. The Honor View20 isn't far behind, it's just a little soft in places and the P20 Pro hasn't captured a bad photo, it's just not quite as good as the other two with it looking a little HDR.

Winning Order: 1. Mate20 Pro, 2. Honor View20, 3. P20 Pro.

3 smartphones producing 3 rather different results and we have to say, we prefer the Huawei Mate20 Pro's shot overall. Detail may be lost in the sky, which has been washed out, but overall, the brightness and clarity of the shot is much better. Colour accuracy isn't bad either with only the sky letting the photo down. The Huawei P20 Pro image is a little underexposed but colours are accurate and the photo captured with the Honor View20 is, again, a little underexposed but colours are good.

Winning Order: 1. Mate20 Pro, 2. Honor View20, 3. P20 Pro.

There's a pattern occurring with the Mate20 Pro capturing the prefered shot but once again, it is a little over sharp. The Honor View20 has done a good job, it's just lacking a little bit of sharpness/detail in comparison and the P20 Pro has, again, given the image an HDR feel which some may like but it's not as true-to-life as the other results are.

Winning Order: 1. Mate20 Pro, 2. Honor View20, 3. P20 Pro.

All three smartphones do a decent job at capturing a selfie but the P20 Pro selfies are a little darker than the other two and the results from the Honor View20 are much brighter, almost too bright. Overall, we like the balance of the images captured with the Mate20 Pro but they do all have slight clipping issues in the bokeh examples.

Winning Order: 1. Mate20 Pro, 2. Honor View20, 3. P20 Pro.

Click on the above images to view the large versions and you can see sharpening going on in the P20 Pro shot and there are aberrations in the image captured with the Honor View20, which, in comparison with the other two images is quite soft. The image captured with the Mate20 Pro is also a little over sharp but gives the best overall result.

The auto white balance option on all three smartphones does a decent job with the image captured on the Honor View20 just appearing a little darker than the other two images.

All three smartphones have a good ISO range but when you start to work your way up through the numbers, the P20 Pro and View20 do start to struggle in comparison to the Huawei Mate20 Pro. Zoom in on the grey bar and you can see noise appearing in the image captured with the Huawei P20 Pro and noise is even more present in the image captured with the Honor View20 with colour artefacts really taking hold and detail starting to fall off.

Winning Order: 1. Mate20 Pro, 2. P20 Pro, 3. View20.

Video Quality

Huawei Mate20 Pro - 4K video uses electronic image stabilisation, making video much more stable than without, although there can be some weird distortion at the edges as you pan and move the phone around. Focus was disappointing, particularly when using the 3x telephoto camera - where it simply refused to focus correctly on a number of occasions. The wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle cameras performed much better, but care needs to be taken to ensure the focus is correct. The 4K videos often used different frame rates, which will be frustrating if you want to combine a number of different videos later.

You can record FullHD video at 60 or 30fps. High-speed video is available, recording FullHD video at 120fps, or 720p video at 240 or 960fps. The selfie, front-facing camera can record FullHD video.

Huawei P20 Pro The camera will record 4K UHD video at 30fps (37-39mbps), FullHD video at 60fps (25mbps), FullHD video at 120fps (slow-mo), and super slow-mo at 960fps at a reduced resolution of 720p. The video mode uses the main 40mp camera, and you can't select the other cameras.

If you want to switch on electronic image stabilisation, then you need to record at a reduced resolution and frame rate, of FullHD and 30fps. Video quality is good, although it's a shame that stabilisation isn't better when using the 4K video mode. The highest resolution video available using the selfie camera is FullHD+.

Honor View20 - 4K UHD video can be captured at 30fps along with a super slow-motion mode that captures footage at 960fps. There's also a 1080p video option available that shoots at 30fps. There's no optical stabilisation but the AI stabilisation does a good job at smoothing footage when shooting handheld.

Ratings

Huawei Mate20 Pro:

"Overall, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is a true flagship smartphone, pushing the boundaries of what's considered possible with a smartphone, with a stylish design, in-screen fingerprint reader, face recognition, 3D scanning, impressive battery life, extremely fast processor, plenty of storage and more. With three cameras it offers a variety of shooting possibilities, and will certainly keep the majority of people very impressed."

Huawei P20 Pro:

"On first impressions, and as long as you don't look at the photos in too much detail, the P20 Pro produces reasonable results. The ability to shoot photos with a 7-second exposure handheld when taking night photos, is quite breathtaking, as long as you don't mind the soft image that you get. If you're more serious about photography and do want to spend time editing photos or use them for something more important, then you get better images from the alternative smartphones mentioned, albeit without the same number of cameras. Overall, the Huawei P20 Pro offers four different cameras, but doesn't quite deliver a great camera experience from all four of them."

Honor View20:

"The Honor View20 will grab the attention of photographers with the headline '48-megapixel camera' and rightly so, it's a pretty cool thing to see in a smartphone.

Overall, image quality is good (both 48MP and 12MP) with an accurate reproduction of colours (even in dull conditions) and the night mode is particularly impressive as you don't even need a tripod (thanks to a clever night scene mode)! Selfies look great and portraits, particularly with a bit of bokeh, are excellent.

The design is great, particularly with the cool nanolithography and the screen is a really decent size, even more so with the cutout camera rather than a top-notch taking up room.

If you're looking for a smartphone that's full of camera features, is a reasonable price and is capable of taking really good photos - have a look at this one."

Our Pick: Huawei Mate20 Pro

Honor View20 Vs Huawei Mate 20 Pro Vs Huawei P20 Pro : Huawei Mate20 Pro (11)

We couldn't really finish the comparison without picking a favourite and in all honesty, we'd be happy to spend money on any of the devices but for image quality, we'd choose the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

You do, of course, need to spend a bit more money but if you want to be able to capture a wide variety of scenes and subjects accurately, this device (overall) gives the best results.

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is a true flagship smartphone and one we're still using now several months after its release.
