For those who've never used a darkroom, you'll be forgiven for thinking that the Dodge and Burn tools are something that Adobe came up with when putting their popular photo editing software together but actually, Dodging and Burning is a technique that came out of the darkroom. However, like most things that have been digitised, Dodging and Burning is now a much quicker process and it's also more precise.

Dodging and Buring is, basically, a process that's used to lighten or darken specific areas of an image. Robin Whalley's wrote a really good introduction to using Dodging and Burning tools which you should take a look at if it's not something you've played around with before.

The tutorial above expands further on Robin's tutorial, using a mixture of blend modes, masks and the paintbrush tool to lighten and darken specific areas of the cave image to give a very clean result. The video tutorial's by Jimmy McIntyre and the visual, step-by-step method makes it easy to learn how to use these very useful tools.

If you've not got your fill of the Dodge and Burn tools, we've also got a tutorial on using them to improve black and white landscapes and in our 'four easy ways to create a vignette in Photoshop' tutorial, using the Dodge & Burn tools is one of the methods that's listed. The Dodge and Burn tools are something that Photoshop Elements fans can use, too.
